Noticed you shifted from 'one survey course' to 'shiny eye economists'.

Fits you trying to make people think you were't wrong in the first place.

I most certainly hope Bush can live up to the Reagan legacy. Just as Reagan defeated communism, let us hope Bush can defeat islamic fundamentalism.

there's a bit of difference, communism wasn't around long enough to imprint itself on the country, islam on the other hand has been around a long time. and oh yeah, islam doesn't make your economy go to pot, besides eagan just sat there and said, "tear that wall down!" he was in a great position to get the credit fo rending communism when he had almost nothing to do with it

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

quote:
If every country tried to avoid debt (ie, the constitutional amendment requiring balanced budgets) you'd see a Depression as bad as the 30s.

But there IS a depression and right now every country DOES try to avoid debt: this is the IMF policy for restructuring problematic economies and more or less the EU policy for aligning candidate countries with the EMU. Argentina f.e. tried hardly to reduce debts and it's economy collapsed.

I wonder, if this miraculous IMF policy really works, why the hell don't the USA follow it themselves?

The same question could be asked about free trade and a couple more stuff.

I have a reason for you, but you probably won't like it:

IMPERIALISM

As for spending, it isn't private spending only that boosts the economy. Public spending does the job equally well. Even military spending does the same thing, if you have a national weapons industry like the US does, but military spending is obviously detrimental, since it will be junk if left unused and it will bring disaster if it is used (destroying wealth in the process). So the only way is social spending, or direct investments. Your only way to save capitalism, it is to go socialist.

Nah! All this situation is just another effort to reverse the DTotAPP...

No, supply-side really doesn't work according to what it is supposed to be able to do. However, tax cuts can do wonderful things to an economy in tatters like in the late 70s. If he tried it in, say, the mid 50s, it wouldn't have worked too well. The time was really good for the policy.

And of course his main legacy success was his chaning the mood of ordinary Americans. A sea change in thinking about government and America's respect and role.

By telling them "Government is evil. Fear the government. Hate big government. Government is the root to all evil!"???

When he could have been encouraging more participation in the government, and using the government for good rather than his evil Iran-Contra Star Wars spending sprees?

Again, one has to ask: How does an 8 year old measure the mood of America at that time? You reading the Guide to America's Mood Index again? Basically, you think his great legacy is in making Americans "feel" powerful again?

Exactly. Reagan and Black dragon were in kindergarten or primary school when Reagan was around. They don't remember rust belt theory or how depressed the U.S. economy was under Reagan. Reagan didn't turn that around, he caused it.

So his economics didn't work but because some book probably written by a cronie says Reagan changed the "mood" in America --and all good econ students know precisely how to quantify 'mood,' apparently -- you think he's (one of) the greatest president(s) ever...

Oh, orange... just realized something (no wonder)

You DO realize that chart is until 1983... sorry, I remember Reagan's adminstration lasted until 1989!

Deliberatly taking numbers that show the worst and ignoring those that don't show the whole picture?

We were still in recession in those years. FED chair Volker was clamping down on inflation... which leads, naturally to higher unemployment (inverse relationship). And they did clamp down. Afterwards the economy took off

Try to tell the whole story next time, k?
