President Bush is starting to remind me a lot of President Reagan Put an end to popups!

Of course many of you wouldn't remember Reagan

Similarities: Lots of bellicose talk, thin on detail. Big picture man. Doesn't work too hard. Building up the military while the economy goes down the tubes. Deficit financing. Star wars. Very popular in the United States but scaring the sh*t out of his allies. Mercurial. Unpredictable. Runs more on emotion than logic. Uses Hollywood Western metaphors.

Reagan and Bush have a lot in common. I would say Dubya has more in common with Reagan than Bush Senior.

Maybe some of the older Oter's might wish to comment?

When Reagan was President I was really afraid start world war III. I'm getting that feeling again now

Damn, I with Bush was like Reagan... unfortunetly he isn't close to the legacy yet (and I don't think he will be, really).

The economy didn't 'go down the tubes', at least not in the US. Compare the 70s with 1989, for instance .

And, also... yeah, of course he's more like Reagan... he's modeled himself after him. After all, he is the hero of the Republican Party. Like FDR was to the Dems.

Regan and Bush Sr. made a laughing stock out of the U.S. with their irresponsible spending. Bush Jr. looks to try to top them both and possibly get us involved in a half dozen pointless wars at once.

Laughing stock? Carter already did all he could to do that .

Reagan set the US back on track and gained some respect that was lost with the debacles of the 70s.

Yeah, yeah - I'm only cussing you because what I'm interested in is the atmospherics not the history. You needed to have a bit older than 9 to remember that as a voter and taxpayer.

Surely you couldn't have been 9 anyway - when did Reagan leave office? 1988?

Deficit spending is perhaps the best way to raise a nation out from a recession. And it did that... added to that the whole 'spend the USSR into poverty' thing worked extremely well.

And seeing that the GDP of the US is $9 trillion a year, it ain't catastrophic by any means.

If every country tried to avoid debt (ie, the constitutional amendment requiring balanced budgets) you'd see a Depression as bad as the 30s.

Raising taxes to cut the deficit which led to a crunch on companies, which cut jobs, leading to a recession. He fell on the sword for what he felt needed to be done.

'89. The election was in '88, Bush took office January 20th, 1989.

Though I guess you are right. I was thinking of the year, rather than the day. So I was 8.

Perhaps... but remember they dealt with different things. Reagan came in with a faltering economy, while with Bush, the economy was about to fall into recession but no one knew when. So it is a different case.

However, like I said, Bush's political idol is Reagan (even if he did say Jesus in the debate ).

Sorry, Imran, that's all bunk. It's very easy to wreck the future to pay for today (by giving your close friends sweetheart deals) and look like a hero...for a time, until even the Religious Right idiots wake up one day and realize that their 'Hero' was mortgaging their kids' futures.

Despite the Republican pipe dream, history *will* see the Reagan-Bush years for what they really were: One of the biggest scams ever pulled.

And let me ask you this: When Bush Jr. stared in the cameras and decided to spend the "projected" surplus instead of preparing for contingencies and FINALLY paying off our debts, did you jump up and down screaming: "Yes! The economy is going to turn around!"

Right. Now that we are billions over budget and sinking on a daily basis, look at the economy brought by these Republican geniuses.

The worst thing that could ever have happened to the U.S. is that the God-awful Reagan-Bush legacy would rise from the dead and strike us all once again with its diseases. Sadly, like a bad Hollywood nightmare, the axis of evil has taken hold of the White House once again.

History will look back and look upon the Reagan-Bush years fondly. When there was "Morning in America". When we rose from the horrors of the 70s and America became strong again. When the economy turned around from the 70s (the stock market doubled during the 80s), setting up the boom of the 90s.

Already historians are ranking Reagan high. In the coming years, he'll continue to be ranked in the Top 10, and will be remembered as a great President.

I certainly do remember the Reagan years. It is true that Carter had really left a pall over the White House. He was a truly smart and compassionate and (for Washinton) moral man ... who failed to connect with the people. Then we saw a truly idiotic and decietful (Iran-Contra anybody?) man come in ... who sold the American public on this Hollywood cowboy bullsh!t (Bush Jr. again, as you say?).

National debt? Ah, who cares ... We're America! And America doesn't need to spend money responsibly!

Sadly, the average American idiot ate it up. Unfortunately, America has yet to learn that it's better to have a competent president who screws his secretary rather than an imbicile who screws the people.

You really have no conception of economics do you?

Since when has deficit spending been the end all? Especially when it has been less than 5% of GDP every year? Btw, the GDP growth in the 80s was incredible compared to the late 60s and 70s. After Nixon, Ford, and Carter, the country was going no where. It found a purpose with Reagan... the idea of the shining city on the hill. Inspired confidence in the American people (sharing the one good thing that JFK had).

And Carter failed because he tried too much to be an outsider. His CoS didn't even meet with the Speaker of the House (Tip O'Niell) until 3 years into his administration. Carter was the idiot. He didn't surround himself with competant people.

God Bless Ronnie!

Well, Imran:

1) At this point in your life, your 'understanding' of economics is limited to a survey course. Keep us posted once you try to get a job and support a family.

2) If you are right, Bush Jr. should dramatically revitalize the U.S. economy. So let's just ignore that America under Bush is in the worst shape it has been in years or that the budget is looking to completely implode ... and let's wait for this Reagan-esque miracle.

Bush Jr. might not even last 1 term, if you catch my meaning.

I think the commentators are already starting to pick up on the fact that the more U.S. economy slides and messy little scandals like Enron start to entangle the White House, the more Dubya wraps himself in the flag and talks about the war. The public are usually a bit slower to pick up on this but they will.

And of course if the war goes on too long or goes badly, he's cactus. But even if the war goes well, as George Bush senior found, he could still be cactus if he doesn't fix the economy before the next election.

Hyperbole, much? Worst shape it's been in years? Well, you do realize that you can't have a boom forever? There eventually is a bust period, yes? And since when is the budget looking like it'll implode.

The US economy should crawl out of recession (the WTC thing is a wild card thrown in) and then rapidly go into boom, which will turn into bust in 10 years or so. Bush can take steps to make the recession short lived (and it looks like he just might) and go into boom as quickly as possible.

Actually if you look at his writings from the time, he knew it'd hasten or deepen a recession. He felt with high approval ratings it was the right time to do so.

There actually are some decent people in politics, I consider Bush, Sr. to be one of them. Others include former Sen. Bob Kerrey, former Sen. Bill Bradley, and former Sen. Bob Dole.
