edit: one more useful term: "pulling a rasputin" = a massive increase in the number of posts (as compared to prior posting behavior) in the Apolyton/Community forum. such behavior can lead to a massive pcr. i think it's time for me to go lurk somewhere

I don't see anything wrong with being a troll. A troll is just basically an attempt to get people thinking. Generate thought provoking response.

Most of the people who react negatively to trolls are simply incapable of having a thoughtful response. So, they attack the troll.

By definition, trolls are a higher form of web life. Their prey, the fish, are the lowlifes.

Many of the best discussions are sparked by a troll. One of the reasons the general level of conversation here at POLY is so low is that some of the mods are not intelligent enough to keep their fingers out of the pie. Many a promising thread has been moved or closed before it could develop.

Since you are discussing forum terminology, mods who do that are known as hacks.

Also, thank you for asking all the questions I've always wondered about. Like the abbreviations and mad 'poly speak.

I do know what a troll is, as has been answered and mis-answered previously. It is someone who comes to a message board with the specfic intention to incite bad feeling among some or all of the readers and posters there.

I once (on another message board) quoted some university research people didn't want to hear and got accused of trolling. I just couldn't bear people ignorantly talking out of their bottoms. Hence I can consider myself a virtuous troll.

Thats not trolling, the intent was to enlighten, not to provoke. A troll is with the implicit intent of creating oppositional frenzies.

A troll would be *cough* creating *cough* using figures in the same manner as MarkL.

Jimmy trick's post is a perfect example of trolling. I give it only a 2 for originality, but an 8 for form. AH's tribal reference gets a 7 for creativity but only a 5 for form.
