Cover songs that improve on the originals Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations: Deluxe Edition

Sometimes when a well known rock band does a cover of an older song it ends up sounding better. These are the ones I like:

Shout - covered by Disturbed
Let the good times roll - covered by Powerman 5000
Smooth Criminal - covered by Alien Ant Farm
Paranoid - covered by Megadeth
Symptom of the Universe - covered by Sepultura
Sweet Leaf - covered by Godsmack
Renegades of Funk - Rage Against the Machine

Which covers do you think improved on the originals?

Why "Well Known"? Does that mean I can't like Johnny Allan's "Promised Land" or Derrick Harriot's "Do I Worry?" because the originals by Chuck Berry and Frank Sinatra are better known?

The ones I know are by well known bands mostly, but if you want to list others go ahead.

Maybe not, but I like it. The original is also very good.

I just remembered another one I like, "Sympathy for the Devil" covered by Guns n Roses

I'm sorry, being a big Stax fan I consider the Otis original a superior version.

Talking of which, his cover of Satisfaction was absoultely brilliant.

I honestly never got the appeal of that particular cover. Long, slow, drawn-out blues-jam without the energy I know Henrix is capable of (Crosstown Traffic on the same record is great), uninspired in production and sung in a very strange fashion, again without the full vocal resources Henrix has. Plus over half of it is a ****ing guitar solo, which I hate.

igh....disturbed Shout was not better than tears for fears. lol.

"SUgar Me Sweet" by STP

i dunno if it was BETTER. but tori amos does an awesoe cover of "Smells like TEen SPirit"

"alanis morrissette can do "king of Pain" by the police decently

marilyn manson does the BEST "i put a spell on you" ..originally by screaming jay hawkins. he does it better. I think his "Sweet Dreams" is pretty wicked too. His "Tainted Love" is also the best to date.

I also think Alien Ant farm did a better job. (but i prefer Movies to that song)

pretty much any metallica cover.

well I have exceptions esp. with garage inc. I like black sabbath's version better, I like the orginal turn the page better as well. I'm divided on Astronomy. I like both versions equally for different reasons.

Don't forget Slayers Inna Gadda La Vida. Although I miss the organ part. So I like both of those equally as well.

I don't agree with Megadeth's Paranoid. But it is a good cover.

Cradle of filth has 2 good covers. hell awaits and hallowed be thy name. But I still like the originals better.

Exodus- lowrider.

Megadeth- Liar.

Megadeth- I aint' superstitious.

Megadeth- Anarchy in the U.K.

Some really great covers are:

Janis Joplin's - "Ball and Chain" (Big Mama Thorton)
Melissa Etheridge - "Piece of My Heart" (Janis Joplin)
***Not Saying I Like Either Better Here. Both are great***

Cher - "All I Really Want to Do" (Bob Dylan)
