I think the price range you listed in your poll is a little high. I'm not sure how much the "limited edition" is selling for these days, but $70 sounds a little high.

In terms of intrinsic value, based on the comments that I've read from those who purchased it, I'm not sure if Civ III LE has much.

The short answer would be that I'd be willing to pay $44 for it if I were to buy it today. After all, that appears to be its current monetary value, just as $50 was its value when I bought it back in early November.

the price range is definitely high, at release the LE was $60.

given the chance to buy it over, i wouldn't pay more than $25-$30 for the regular edition. the LE is just a waste of money.

Considering the condition of this game, reasonable price for me would be in the $10-$20 range.
In fact, I paid $-10 for it. Because I bought it for $35 and immediately sold it for $45. So I made $10 in the progress.

I'm a casual collector of stuff-still have my old comic book collection, still pick up coins and stamps when I see a choice buy. Bottom line is, I'm a collector...

I like the LE tin. Sure it's cheaply made, but it does look pretty cool. Was it worth $55? He!! no it wasn't. But on the whole, I would say that the kischty tin is probably the best thing I've gotten out of the CivIII experience thus far

Oh, yeah. That....and that awesome video CD of Sid giving piano lessons to his kid.

The actual inquiry wasn't absolutely necessary. (See below for the relevance of this puzzling sentence.)

Recently I came across a copy of Civilization III on sale in a main street store for the princely sum of $6.25. This struck me as an intriguing offer, and for those of you interested in tracking down this offer, follow the subsequent clues:

The price was not originally in USD - I had to convert it mentally.

The CDROM they were trying to sell was a rewritable, and the sales person wore a frayed T shirt and smoked incessantly whilst talking to me in Mandarin Chinese.

The city I was in was the capital city of a country that has just joined the WTO and therefore agreed to an international standard of combatting piracy and copyright theft.

This particular country has received largely positive coverage in the western press. I have not encountered any western news reports linking this country with software piracy, although from what I've just stated it quite obviously exists.

I did not buy the CDROM because I felt it was unethical, plus it would have been bloody hard to get it past the tight border controls.

For those of you who still cannot guess which country this is, take the first letters of the first six words of this post.



Hint: It's not China.

I gotta agree that the range is too high, otherwise I would have voted. I haven't bought it yet, but would pick it up for curiosities sake if it was less than $20 US.

I have played Civ3 for hundreds of hours, and have spent dozens of hours on this forum. The cost of the game was about what I would spend taking the family to a movie.

I would gladly pay $10 a month for updates like I do now with Asheron's Call.

That's interesting. What sort of monthly updates do the makers of that game provide for that fee? Or more on topic, what sort of updates do you think Firaxis could provide if they used that service model?

Civ3 was an unusual buy for me. I usually buy computer games when they get discounted, but got Civ3 the first day it was available.

It's given me plenty of playing time, with my only gripe being the tendency towards tedium late in the game. Even so, it has given me a lot more bang for the buck than games I bought for under 20 dollars.

Overall it's a good fun game. No regrets for the forty dollars I plunked down.

Most of you guys have obviously purchased many other computer games in the past years. The civ series is almost all I have played.

Of the 20+ hours per week on Civ3 I have played since 10/30/01, I think I have gotten quite a good exchange for my money, even though I also bought the near-worthless tin. (Last I checked, the tin version was down to the price of the regular version at CompUSA).

I had saved up my money, and since I only had a Mac, my Civ3 cost me only $65 for the game plus $1,300 for the PC. The only things I do on the PC are play Civ3 and download updates to it.

Where's the $1,000+ selection in the poll?

Asherons Call updates the fantasy world in which your role-playing character resides:

Civ could provide units, maps, techs, etc. However, they probably will not follow this model, but will repeat the success of their previous incarnations. I think they will release a scenario editor and let the players have all the fun.

I better not mention here how much I'd be willing to pay for a comprehensive scenario editor for Civ III. Someone from Firaxis might see it and take that as an indication of how much everyone would be willing to pay for it, and we'll all be bled white.

I'd be willing to pay ten bucks for the game. I'll just have to wait a few months for it to start showing up in the bargain bin; it'll probably take that long for people to finally start ignoring the game reviews that say "We give Civ III a 98% because, well, it's Civ III!" After that it'll be all down hill for the game.

hey people stop voting for $70!!

Infogrames accountants will see this. And you can guess what will happen with games in the future.

We've been lucky there haven't been substantial increases in game costs the past 5 years or so (of course the companies make add ons to increase their profits). Who knows how long that will last.

If the non-existent scenario editor ever comes out then I'd consider getting it for the present full market price, about a hundred $ Aus.
If the LE contained what it was supposed to then I'd probably grab that instead.
Without said editor I won't touch the thing.

I would pay around $30-40 for the game and all the LE "extras". I do kind of like the tin, and despite the games flaws I have a good time with it...but I do feel a bit ripped off, paying $60 for the LE.

I bought the US Limited edition last November here for 79 German marks, that's about $35. It's a good price and I don't feel ripped off. I feel rather ripped off by Microsoft, because especially for playing Civ3 I had to install an operating system, that was more expensive and much more buggy than a game can ever be.
