Other than Greg Bear, I believe that Poul Anderson has many interesting ideas... I wouldn't be surprised if the developers of MOO3 are reading Anderson, Asimov, Bear, Brin etc. as homework.

If you havent read Orson Scott Card, you have really missed some great Sci-Fi.

"Enders Game" is a must !

Definitely. But so far MoO3's races and storyline is much more reminiscent to Bear's and Brin's universes. A feudal space opera.

The sequels to ender's game are good, but not quite as good.

Another awesome speculative fiction author, and an old one at that, is E. E. Smith, with his Lensman novels.

A contemporaty of Heinlin Clarke and Azimov, Corwainer Smith was far ahead of his time and had a truely visionary universe. Where Heinlin's stories aged poorly and quickly (how many 22nd century chemical rocket ships whose computers are hand coded in binary do you think there will be?), Smith's books still belong to the future.

Another good author is Donaldson, whose Ill Earth series you might recall. His new science fiction series is based on the nebulung myths and is quite valuable.
