Help. No multiplayer with Cable? Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

A few weeks ago our service provider (we have cable) switched our modems to get us a faster connection. Instead of behaving like a dial-in modem, this modem behaves like a second LAN connection. Since we installed the new modem we have a much faster connection but we are no longer able to play CTP on-line.

When starting multiplayer and selecting Internet we get a message form CTP saying that we first have to dial in.

Can anybody please help us out with this? How do I tell CTP that for the Internet connection it should not search for a dial-in connection but should use the second LAN connection instead?

Very helpful Blackice!!

The problem is not with CTP is it.... So the problem to solve is how to make the Connection behave (to ctp) like it is an internet connection! And I aint got the foggiest idea how you can do that... Just out of interest, does it work on your LAN for Multiplay? Or does it get confused because both the dial up and Lan behave similarly... I don't think there are any technically minded people that will be of any great help in this somehow!

Thank you guys for your interest (even though it did not help yet).

Yes, Gavrushka. We can play a multiplayer game on our own LAN. No problem.

I expect more people to have the same problem because the solution of my provider is not unique. I just hope someone solved it. For the time being we are out of the on-line game. We miss you guys.

Blackice has a good point indeed. I'm no MP expert but if you get an in-game error message, reinstalling the game could very well help you get rid of it. At the very least it's worth a shot...

OK, I will give it a try during the weekend. I would be surprised if it worked though because the game was installed after the installation of the new modem but who knows? If it worked for Blackice it might work here to.

Thanks again. You will hear the result.

Suffering from ads?

Hmm, that's odd. Did you remove all the software of the old modem and the dial-up connections and stuff? I recently switched from ISDN to cable myself and initially had quite some difficulties with IE, it still tried to use dial-up as well. A combination of removing all the old modem and dial-up stuff and reinstalling IE solved the problem IIRC.

Definately a must do remove it all as far as dial up goes. Ctp will not adjust itself until that and a reload.

I did install Windows-XP from scratch (after formatting the disk) and then installed the new modem so their should not be any dial-up remnants and only then CTP.

Anyway from what I read here it should work. At least this gives me hope.

BTW: did not yet reinstall CTP since I am at work now (LOL). Will reinstall in the weekend.

Your CPU has a dial-up modem. Disable it...see what happens..it may be CTP reading its default.

control panel, under modems. If it says you need to dial up. It sounds like CTP is trying to use your default dial-up modem

if all else fails, call your cable provider and demand some kind of advice.

Cable modem is not a dial-up connection. It is a network in principle. You will not be able to use the internet connection. With cable you only have lan/wan connection unless you can get a direct connection to the internet, but I doubt it. If you want high speed you need dsl inorder to have a dial up connection.

Got spare money?

If you have Windows configured to automatically dial when you access the Internet, choosing the TCP/IP LAN transport will cause your modem to dial, even though you're only accessing the LAN. To work around this problem, either click "Cancel" when the Windows Internet dialup dialog box comes up, or disable automatic dialing by checking "Connect to the Internet using a local area network" (which will uncheck "Connect to the Internet using a modem") in Control Panel/Internet/Connection.

Good news Full PM-box? Change here!

We have good news. First we connected the Soho adapter to one of our Windows 98 machines. It did not immediately connect to the Internet so we defined in Internet Explorer/Internet options/LAN settings "Auto detect settings". After that the W98 machine connected to the Internet and........ YES, also to the CTP servers.

I than took a long shot and defined the same auto detect settings in XP. I remembered from installation that that had not been necessary to connect to the Internet. Indeed, the box was not checked. I checked it, started CTP and IT ALL WORKED.

Thanks to all of you who helped us out here. It gave us a warm feeling knowing that you were all thinking along with us and coming up again and again with new, good ideas.

So it looks we are back again

We only need to install a new servers.dat file because we only found the us1 server and could not get into the lobby. I assume however that that is a totally different problem. Thanks again, guys. Get frightened since we will crush you.
