I don't know if any one mentioned it or not but NBC really pissed me off. They would constantly cut to commercials during the 15 second breaks; meaning I kept losing parts of the game. Of course they had to run commercials so I guess, I'm more pissed about the 15 second face off rule.

CBC did the same thing during previous games, but I didn't seem to notice it during the final. If they'd missed a goal then we might have reinstated the death penalty specifically for them...

Canada wasn't really playing that game. Who knows what happened.

The cool thing about the tourney was each game Canada got way better, up through this very last game.

It's going to be really hard to going back to watching regular NHL after this. Especially since Iginla and Turek (supposed to be the third goalie for Czech) are the only really "good" players on the local team.

Canada got Golds in:

  • Men's Ice Hockey
  • Women's Ice Hockey
  • Men's 500m Shorttrack (Marc Gagnon)
  • Men's 5000m Shorttrack relay
  • Ladies 500m longtrack speedskating (Catriona Le May Doan)

We probably would have gotten 500m men's longtrack speedskating as well had Jeremy Wotherspoon not have fallen on the fourth stride.

And for some really odd reason our Curling teams both screwed up bigtime in the only games that really matter.

Every sport we do well in involves skates.

So what is it about the Czech Republic that produces good goalies? Hockey isn't even close to being the most popular sport there, but they pump out way more quality goalies than Sweden, Finland... hell, maybe even Russia and the U.S.

Anyway, huge congrats to Canada on a great Olympics. I remember watching CBC early on, they were having one of those "Bell Connection" thingies, and the question was "What do you think of Canada's showing thus far?" And the vast majority thought Canada had blown it, big time. I kept thinking, "Damn, it's still early folks..."

Way to turn it around.

You could easily ask the same question about French-Canadian goalies. It's bizarre sometimes to compare the number of goalies from quebec to the total number of players from quebec.

Suffering from ads?

A couple of things

1. CBC played no commercials at all during the 15 second breaks-- it was one of the first things I noticed

2. The win prevents another round of examining the state of Canadian hockey by various critics and pundits as happened after the medal-less showing in Nagano. People forget how well Canada had played up until Hasek just beat them in a game Canada dominated

3. The premise that Sweden deserves some credit for beating Canada in the early round is idiotic. -- The set-up is such that to a large extent, the first 3 games were irrelevant-- To be a champion you have to win the games that matter.

4. herb Brooks derserves a lot of credit for his extended winning streak but at his after-game press conference he did say one thing that I didn't respect. Among some praise for Canada he mentioned how his players were pretty banged up after the Russia game and that " for the life of me I don't understand how they do the seedings"-- Canada had Finland- Belarus while the Us had germany -Russia- since Finland had finished ahead of Russia in the prelims, its hard to see his complaint.

5 Women's hockey-- I just can't wait for the next battles-- There is a greta rivalry there.

What a fantastic game. I stayed up overnight to watch it live at 4 am local time and it was worth every bit of sleep deprivation.

It was great seeing Iginla getting those goals. People were worried that Lemeiux was carrying the goal scoring and that overall, Canada is not producing great players anymore. Iginla shows that we have a lot of young guys who will become superstars.

Fleury was a surprise. I was one among those who thought he should have been dropped for Thornton, but the passion Fleury showed was incredible.

Gotta love the story about a Canadian gold-coloured $1coin being placed at centre ice. A very secret weapon.
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/020226/6/k30a.html

The unheralded players have to be the guys who shut down Hull and LeClair. The two top American players were almost completely neutralized.

CBC reports that 8.6 million Canadians watched the game with the audience peaking at 10.4 million as the game ended.

As Trudeau once said: The universe is unfolding as it should.

Damn right. Good to see a young fella play so large, on so large a stage. As much as I'd like to see more NHL teams based in Canada, playing for the Calgary Flames just doesn't compare.

Also should be noted--Iginla was the first black man to win gold at the Winter Olympics. That is nothing short of fantastic news for the future of hockey. (Though tragic news of its past.)

Iginla is trully a classy gentleman, if he sticks around I can see him as being as popular as Lanny McDonald.

The one thing that I like about the news coverage around where I live is that, the fact that Iginla is black never comes up, it wasn't until this year that it has even been acknowledged. His race is a non-issue here.

Of course, congrats to Canada. Also to USA for beating Russia. But... now that I think of it, it seems to me that the final Canada-Russia would have been much more interesting. After all, hockey-wise, the Americans are only junior partners to Canada and therefore have an inherent inferiority complex. This felt very much during the game.

I saw a story in the Globe about his family background and what it means to black people, or at least the writer who is black. Not a very good article. The writer didn't know much about hockey. (He suggested that Gomez was Canadian )

I don't know if it is a good or bad thing that his race is never mentioned. I don't like the idea of constantly mentioning his race, but at the same time he is a role model for black kids who want to play hockey just as Kariya is for Asian-Canadians.
