Well unfortunately I have been around this forum longer than is healthy... anyways one day I came back and looked at some posts and all the people had these crappy little pictures next to their names. "Thats stupid" I said, and hastily began a thorough two minute search for the stupidest picture on the net and.... Ta dah! The rest is history.

My avatar was on someones laptop at my last job. The person had been terminated and I was getting ready to re-image their machine when I noticed the nice wallpaper they had and kept it. Later when Apolyton got avatars I decided to use it because I have always liked pictures of space and satellite photos of earth.

A quick look over the message board index reveals many threads about the "World's Hottest Women" and whatnot. I'd just like to know why straight people are so obsessed with straight culture that they need to make threads that are totally.. well.. straight?

A lot of gay people feel the need to "advertise" the fact that they're gay as a way of telling other gays that they are gay. It's one of those things you probably don't think about : How much harder do you think it is for gay men to get dates compared to straight men? When you're straight, it's safe to assume the girl you're hitting on is straight. It's not like that for gay people, so some have their rainbow shirts and whatnot.

Others do it as a way of saying "We're here, We're queer, Get used to it". It's not like they do it to spite you, it's also for other people to realize that they're not alone, that there's someone else like them out there too and isn't ashamed of it.

If someone wishes to start a discussion thread on the psychological and political reasons that gays come out to friends, family, co-workers, school classmates, and society, that would be cool.

But just one comment from me, and hopefully no more on this in this avatar thread--for me, coming means that I refuse to let the heterosexist society ignore us, or treat us as a tabboo subject.
