	replies versus views ratio Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

friday afternoon

I've looked at views and replies of threads. A lot of threads seem to have a ratio of something about 1:9 in posts:views. Some more, some less.
How about that? Any mathematicians can tell me why, in a way that I probably don't understand? Maybe a good statistics person can break this down into neat graphics?

We should approach threadcharacteristics more scientific to improve on quality.

We had this same discussion a ways back. The average ratio at the time was 1:10. Nobody could really answer "why" that ratio, but it doesn't look like it has changed much over time

well, i think the ratio is really only 7 to 1 or 8 to 1. When you post, it takes you back to the thread, so that is 2 right there...same for every person. maybe 5 to 1 is more accurate

realviews=views - (replies*2-1) + replies

The entire population of finland saw BfB's thread, twice. So that ratio was above 80 or so. Is that less good?

Well Kaak... I never knew that before.

The thread starting post does only count as one view...
But any post after that does indeed count as two views since it does tack on another view when it sends you back to the thread after you post...

Nice catch... that never came up in past discussions that I can remember.

Editing also does the same thing (2 views, 1 "post"). Threads that tend to have heavily editied posts (math/physics threads, etc) will tend to have higher views/replies ratios.

Well, there are those of us who check in, get interested, and then by the time we get to the end of the page we realize we had nothing to say, it has already been said, or that things are getting far too weird or serious to get involved!
