This is a new unit for Exsanqination's Alexander the Great mod, but is also suitable for Scythians, Medes, Persians, Parthians, Sassanids, Huns, Avars, Maygars, Arabs, Seljuk Turks, Saracens, Mamelukes, and all the various horse archer tribes of the Asian steppes and Mongolian plains (in the future I want to make a Mongol horseman UU as well).
This unit can also be used to give non-european nations an alternative to Knights, because in reality the only people who used west european medieval Knights were....er....the west european medieval nations! It just don't look right having the medieval Muslim nations like Egypt, Babylon and Persia (and the Zulus, Aztecs, Iroquois for that matter) building feudal Christian Knights.

There are TWO zip files for this unit, and BOTH are needed in order to make this animation work.
And all you have to do is the following:-
1) download both zip files to a temporary place on your PC,
2) use Windows Explorer to open the CivilizationIII/Art/units folder on your PC and right click the units_32 file so that you can rename it (otherwise it will be overwriten, and so you may want to keep a copy).
3) now just use the unzip browser to unzip both Horsearcher.zip files into CivilizationIII/Art/units. This will create a new folder called Horse Archer which contains all the FLICs and files.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHATS NEW
The two zip files have been updated and now contain Civilopeadia pictures and text, plus there is an alternative "standing-still-shooting-forwards" attack .flc as well as the original "galloping-on-the-spot-shooting-sideways" one, with very simple instructions so that people can customize the unit and use the animation they prefer.

Here is the 2nd zip file. As I said before, you'll need BOTH.
Once unzipped, you will find a readme.txt file which contains full details of how to add this unit to civ3 by using the hacked 1.21f Civ3Editor, as well as some suggested stats for this unit and some very simple customization instructions.

This is another view of the unit (note: the Horse Archer is shooting in the SW direction at the gallop).

....hmmm....well, you've done better then me, because I can't open either of them! They just download as some weird file called "attachment" that my PC can't open.
Both of these files were created using the zipper that comes with Windows 2000XP. I'll try rezipping the originals with WinZip32 which I have on my laptop, then use these to replace the two zip files at the top of this thread and see if I can download them.
Give me a few minutes.....
....nope, still didn't work. All I get is a file called "attachment", but it is the right size. I'll try something else....

rename the attachment to attachment.zip or whatever.zip and then unzip it. if it is an invalid zip, follow the link i posted above and run pkzipfix on it. It's a bug with apolyton not with your zip (let's hope).

Cheers mate! You've sussed it! All I had to do is change the default name "attachment" to "HorseArcher.zip" BEFORE I download. Thanks a lot (mind you, I've made a right pigs ear of the first three posts. Give me half an hour and I'll clean them up a bit). Thanks again.
To repay you for all your help, have a free preview of a Macedonian Companion....

Thanks mate. And just in case people prefer a more conventional 'standing-still-shooting-forwards' attack .flc instead of my current 'galloping-on-the-spot-shooting-sideways' one (which is a bit....unusual), then by this weekend I'll have an alternative one done which I'll stick into an updated zip file on the first post, along with simple instructions on how to customize the .ini file so that everybody can choose the one they like.
Here's a quick preview of the alternative attack animation:-

To Beren,
As I said in the first post, I made this unit for Exsanguination's soon coming Alexander the Great mod. But the Horse Acher could also be used in a normal civ3 game to give non-european nations something else to build INSTEAD of Knights. After all, it would be 'unrealistic' to allow the English/French/Germans to build Elephants. Well, I think that it is just as 'unrealistic' to allow the medieval Arab nations such as Egypt/Babylon/Persia to build west european feudal Knights, because in reality they used Horse Archers, not Knights.
In the readme.txt file of this unit I have made some suggestions for stats for the Horse Archer along the lines of giving it an attack of 3, a defence of 2, and a move of 3 (they need the speed so that can use their traditional tactic of evading and retreating from an enemy charge). This fits nicely into the gap between Horsemen (2-1-2) and Knights (4-3-2). It means that Horse Archers are not as powerful as Knights, but they are faster, cheaper, and easier to build (by not requiring iron, just horse resources).
I have also made the suggestion of only allowing the French/Germans/Romans-Italians/Greeks/Russians/English (and so Americans as well) to build feudal Knights, while the Egyptians/Babylonians/Persians/Aztecs/Iroquois/Zulus build Horse Archers (the other nations such as India/China/Japan already have UU's of their own instead of Knights).
I know it is not strictly historically correct to allow the Aztecs/Iroquois/Zulus to have Horse Archers, but then again, they shouldn't have Knights either!

Oops! You are quite right, it hasn't! I loaded the new version at the CivFanatics Centre but forgot to load it here. Naughty of me....sorry!
I'll have the new version uploaded by this evening (it will also give me a good excuse to change the installation instructions which now need Jimmyh's hacked 1.21f editor).
