WLTK Days.... What exactly do they do in this game? Support Apolyton

In my games I seem to constantly have access to anywhere from 3 to 7 luxuries at a time due to trading. This causes my cities to go in and out of the We Love the Kind Day quite often. In civ2 you got extra trade or a pop boom. In SMAC it was +2 ind, +2 growth, and +2 commerce. You would think after seeing it enough in civ3 I would know what it does, but I can't see that it does anything at all in any government. Would someone please tell me what it does!

Thanks

Busta

WLTKD provides a few benefits:

1) The chance of a city converting to another civ are halved.
2) The corruption and waste in a city is reduced, effectively increasing the city's shield output.
3) The effectiveness of propaganda missions against the city are reduced.

The conditions required for a city to enter WLTKD are:

1) No starvation in the city
2) No resistance in the city
3) No unhappy citizens in the city
4) There must be more happy citizens than content ones
5) The city must be large enough. This number is exposed in the editor, and defaults to a size 6 city.

I don't think I missed anything...?

Hey Dan,

Aren't you suppose to have been transferred out of here by now? Like, hand the site volunteer work to a lesser mortal and move on to bigger and more important responsibilities?

Was under impression you got a 'promotion' of some kind. Congrats.

Just out of interest, why did they change the WLTKD from Civ 2? I think that Civ 2's WLTKD was much better as it had government-specific benefits which added to the gameplay a lot, in my opinion.

Just to satisfy my curiosity, why did they change it from gov-specific things?

I'm pretty sure I have seen WLT?D when the number of happy citizens was the same as the number of content citizens.

Been using the same alias since I went online for the first time about 15 years ago. I chose it more or less randomly.

It doesn't stike me as strange -- I was active in dial-up BBS's in 1984. Although it might not conform to your concept of 'online', I might use that term.

Peace

I'm sure. # happy >= #content will trigger wltkd. & positive or zero growth with no unhappy people of course.

On a side note, like Seth, I started hitting bbs's sometime in '85 or '86. I was a big TradeWars fan. So I can believe being 'online' for 15 years... DARPA net goes back @ least that far anyway, not that I was ever on that. But some people were.

Btw, what game is the screenshot in your sig from?

Thanks,

Ok, thanks. The reviews I've seen of ctp seemed to be more negative than positive, so I never really bothered to check it out.

One of the gripes I have against the civ franchise is their business model of 1) release single-player then, 2) release multi-player. It may make more money for them but I don't have to like it. Not in todays world where most games released come with both abilities in the initial release. & I'd bet that whatever multi-player version they do release, it probly won't support pbem. I *like* pbem. I've played several different wargames against other people using pbem & it has overall been a great experiance! Playing another person (or persons) will always hold more attraction for me than just playing the computer.

There are more gaming companies today that are releasing games in this genre, so, maybe one day there will be one that gets it 'right'.

Sorry to be so far off topic.

Thanks again G,

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

I'm glad they removed the WTKD's making population enlarge under republics etc, this was too powerful and didn't make sense.

It was nice monarchys had more trade each square like a republic under WTKD though, this should be brought back.
Maybe communism WTKD days give more shield production bonuses each square.

CTP has a weak SP engine. But a STABLE Mplayer came with the game on teh first release. Then PBEM and hotseat came next.. And if you play against or with a bunch of humans. The Conept of AI suddenly becomes obselete

Exactly. For learning a game & testing out some ideas playing single player is great. For really playing competitively over the long haul some version of multiplayer just has to be implemented. Imo the single biggest reason that games like Starcraft, Diablo, Quake, Unreal, etc have been so popular for so long is because they enable people to interact with one another. Firaxis will make some money by following their business model, but to cash in on the real money they need to join the 21st century and let us compete with one another, not just the idiot box. They will eventually release a multiplayer version, but it probably won't be until sometime next year and - if civ net was any indication - it will be the same basic game engine with a kludged multiplayer implementation duct taped onto it. Meanwhile the rest of the gaming industry will have moved another two years down the road with better graphics, better ai, better ui, etc. But they will make some money. & they hardly need the civ series to perform at a Starcraft level to continue as a company, SimGolf for instance looks like it will be pretty successful. And another couple of years down the road - maybe 2005 - there will be a civ IV. I wonder if I'll buy it...

Sorry, more ot.

Cheers,
