In case you're wondering what happened to "Custom units part 1", there never was one, it was called "Idea: units as in smac" or something like that, i lost that thread...
So this is a follow up on that.
Maybe first the basic idea of this mod...
You ready?, here it all comes in one sentence:
I liked the idea of making custom units like you could in SMAC so much, that i decided to make a mod that would allow you do this in civ3, in the game.
Now i have to tell you it won't be anything like in smac since that just isn't possible.
This mod changes units mostly, and adds a new tech here and there, but not too many.
First of all, you can forget all the standard units that came with the game, except for UU maybe.
Now there will be three different kind of units that you can build:
Platforms
Components
"Normal" units
an explanation of those:
Platforms:
These are units with the army flag checked, they can contain 2 or more components, this will be enforced by the use of the flags
"Can carry tactical missile"
"Carry foot units only"
Components:
These are the units that do the actual fighting, they have no movement, so must be loaded on a Platform to be used.
To exclude certain components from certain platforms, i will use the flags:
"Tactical missile"
"Foot unit"
"Mounted"
"Normal" units:
these are units that can't be seperated into 2 parts, like bombard units (bombard ability doesn't work with armies), and maybe also white units (no nationality).
Here's a preview for the Ancient era, components only:
(too damn lazy too make a nice html-table, so i just copied it from excel)
the "cost" column is just for comparison, too see which components are more expensive than others.
The new advance wood working will probably come before bronze working
code:
Components
Name Attack Defense Cost Advance
Ancient era
Stick 1 1 1 none
Spear 2 1 2 Wood Working
Wooden Shield 0 2 2 Wood Working
Axe 3 1 3 Wood Working
Bow 4 0 4 Adv. Wood Working
Adv. Bow (Babylon) 4 1 4 Adv. Wood Working
Bronze Shield 0 3 3 Bronze Working
Bronze Armor 0 3 4 Adv. Bronze Working
Sword 4 2 5 Iron Working
Iron Armor 0 4 5 Iron Working
Adv. Sword 5 2 5 Adv. Iron Working
Samurai Sword (Japan) 7 2 5 Adv. Iron Working
Immortals Sword (Persia)6 3 5 Adv. Iron Working
14-3-2002 edit:
Ancient era platforms:
code:
Platforms
Name Movement Space Cost Advance Type
Ancient era
Peasant 1 1 1 none Infantry
Warrior 1 2 2 Warrior Code Infantry
Horse 2 2 4 Horseback Riding Horse

a little update on platforms and weapons once Gunpowder is discovered.
There are two periods, here, one before gunpowder, and one after gunpowder, here's what seperates them besides the advance.
Before gunpowder all platforms could carry two components, mostly because you could make a clear distinction between weapons, and armor.
After gunpowder, the weapon, the musket, is also the defense, so i decided to give a.g. units only one cargo space.
So what makes a.g. platforms better than b.g. platforms?
a.g. platforms can carry guns, b.g. platforms can't, and a.g platforms are probably faster too.
Now not everyone my be able too make guns because of a lack of saltpeter, so the b.g. units/platform/components will not become obsolete immediately, but they are less effective, the guns will probably be at least twice as strong as b.g. weapons and armor
