Civ III crash Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations: Deluxe Edition

When playing Civ III, I get to about 700 BC and every time (recently that is) Windows displays an Illegal Operation Error.
Also if I load the earliest autosave, the game crashes at the same year.
Any one else have this problem, and is there any way around it or to fix it?
I am running on a Win XP machine, PIII 500, 256 MB ram.

I am also getting crashes using Marla's map and the 1.16 and 1.17 patch (tried it both ways).

I use Windows ME with 128 MB Ram on the machine it is crashing on.

Downlad the map from the Files forum or on Civfnatics, and run the install program, alternatively, edit the bic and delete the Piroge unit. (Alt + d when the unit is selected)

Tired of ads?

I got the map file from the official CivIII site.
I don't recall any installation process.

Are you saying that the existence of the special pirogue unit is causing the crash?

Is the file on the Civfanatics or Apolyiton site different than the official one?
