I got taught most stuff from the Pilgrim Fathers onwards. Including native american culture before we arrived, Spanish, French, Dutch and British settlement, expansion westwards, slavery triangle, war of independence etc. Was a course we did in the second or third year of secondary school. Year 8 or 9 nowadays, 12-14. I didn't get much past the 19th century 'cause I dropped history for GCSEs. Read about it on my own since then though.

It is a country! BTW, 25% of the pop. consider themselves to be christian. This is a very high percentage in Europe. We're talking personal faith here, not nominal religion.

No. 8/12 are independent.

The Orkneys
Shetland
Greenland
Iceland
Sealand
Ireland (Eire)

are sovereign states.

Wales
Scotland

are part of GB, but have some sort of independent country status I think.

Wales and Scotland have their own regional parliments but they aren't independent. They just have their own football teams.

AFAIK, it is still a part of Denmark. With a lot of autonomy probably, but not a country in itself. The same goes for the Orkneys and Shetlands (part of GB) and Greenland (Denmark).

And calling Sealand an actual country is a bit dubious, although they declared themselves independent I don't think anyone actually recognized it.

Some degree of autonomy then.

Scottish terrorists really want a complete separation. How about Wales? And we all know about NI.

I'm not European, but who cares.
In the 7-9 grades we learned about the first 13(? ) states, the Boston Tea Party thingie and ummm.... that's it I think. In those grades the grades you get aren't important at all, so everything we learn is immediately forgotten. In the 10-12 grades we have exams which make our history grade, but all we learn about the US is what you did in the world wars.

Only as much as individual US states have.

Scottish terrorists? Nope, there really aren't any. Some Scots and Welsh want independence as do some people in NI. Vast majority in NI want to stay part of the UK which is why they are still part of it.

Yes, but I think they recently gained a lot more independence and self-rule. The Danes should loosen their damp sticky grip. We have been there - it was called the dark night. 400 years long

quote:

I suspected that, but at least the Orkneys and Shetland have their own flag. And they have capitals. Name them.

quote:

Well, in practical policy and thru legal trials Britain has in effect recognised them. Even a diplomat from The Netherlands(? ) had to solve a hostage situation there. Britain was first contacted, but could do nothing.. Apparently.

The country was invaded. Hope it happens again. And this time blow up the piece of junk. A certain obsessive mad(?) German seem to have the power to do it. He's attacked before. Charge!

But agreed, the whole concept is ridiculous. Prince Roy of Sealand

Why do the Brits play along with this sick joke and farce?! They built the dang thing! And should claim ownership. Yes, yes I know about international sea and the British territorial waters... But still!!

There are Scottish separatists. They have sent at least one package to pothead prince Harry with some mildly dangerous contents. And they have threatened the whole royal family as well.

I guess it's not a big deal, but the "royal family" pay no taxes and neither does HavenCo Ltd.. And they're a thorn in the side like the Philistines And it's....sick. But no big matter. It's a curiosity.
