I live right near some flood plains, I can take pictures if you want. At no point, however, does it ever look like a desert. I don't understand the logic that firaxis used there. Also there is no deserts nearby. The floodplains is more like an area of land between a river and the normal dry terrain. This is in my local area and it may be an exception I don't know. But I can tell you it is very furtile and it is flooded even after a simply rainfall.
I think you're pictures are pretty good, although the water looks a little too deep. I guess because it is so blue. But keep up the good work.

Thanks for the compliment . I made the water fairly blue so that it would stick out. The Flood Plain grphic straddles the gridline, and therefore has to be visble enought for 2 squares, not just one. The original premise was to make the flood plains more obvious, so fi figured, the higher the contrast, the higher the visibility. However, if you would like one that is lighter blue, I can probably arrange it.
As far as why they are on the desert, I think firaxis' idea was to make deserts somewhat useful, since there were many civs (notably egypt) that flourished in otherwise dry and sandy areas. I don't think they took into account the vast majority of flood plains (i.e., the Mississippi, Red, Missouri, Ohio, Rhine, Yellow, etc) when they designed them. The reason I think this is because the only place you can place a flood plain graphic is on a desert (and flood plains in deserts look like the Nile). I don't think it was so much a realism thing as it was a game balancing thing.
I too live near a flood plain (albeit a small one). For realism, I should have made the image look like a flooded golf course

Desert Dog,
You may be right about the flood plains by you, I don't question that. Although the ones by me are lush all of the time, with trees and all sorts of greenery. There are actually farms on some of them. The whole area floods quite frequently though, even the farms. The houses are all built on stilts, for obvious reasons.
Despite all of that, I am actually glad you mentioned the desert ones by you, because I had no idea when firaxis came up with those graphics. So I guess the desert ones must appear more frequently, either that or they had too many green terrain tiles already.

I think he means as a bonus resource like the wheat in the plains. Correct me if I am wrong, though.
