I've been thinking about freedom and equality today. We call the USA the "land of the free", but how can we have freedom with such a huge gap between rich and poor? The poorest people in our nation aren't free; much as they might like to have the ultimate freedom - owning a gun and suchlike - they simply can't afford it.
Capitalism patently isn't working. Laissez-faire economics simply haven't worked. I think we should look to the left for inspiration; for a more equal and more free nation.
I'm calling it "compassionate communism".

First off, equality of opportunity is different from equality of results - the former is the best way of running things, the latter is pure evil. |
What is this equality of results you're muttering about? If you are saying this is what communism is about you are throwing a strawman.
As for the so called "equality of opportunity," such a thing does not exist in Capitalism.
Compare William Gates III, whose mother knew the chairman of IBM on a first name basis, and John Q. Normal, whose mother knew a floor sweeper at IBM on a first name basis.

A wealth gap has nothing to do with freedom - it has to do with the ability of people to buy things. |
How does the ability to buy things lead to a wealth gap?

Personally, I think that we should not povide food to starving children at taxpayer expense |
Unless, you are one of those children

so I certainly don't give a **** about the wealth gap between an executive and a janitor. |
Whether you care for it has nothing to do with whether it is morally justified.

You are confusing the concepts of rights and freedom with entitlements again. |
Again, libertarians has yet to provide any adequate argument to this so called "natural rights."

But you do admit if they had the money they'd be perfectly free to buy guns, or whatever, right? How then can lack of money translate to lack of freedom? |
Freedom = degree to do things one wants. A lack of money puts a limitation on this ability. No?

The freedom exists whether someone has the ABILITY to buy something or not. |
So you have the freedom when you are unable to exercise it? Hm, that's news to me. Lets say you're locked in a prison...

Equality of results translates to less freedom, not more - you want to **** over anyone who lives comfortably. But that is an immoral act. |
Strawman, again.
Libertarians really don't have any consistent moral or philosophical basis for their position.
