IIRC, the Qur'an refers to "the black eyed," which is described by later commentators as 72 black eyed virgins. or

ii) Women martyrs get to be men, which is more than a woman could ask for.

Honest guys, I'm not making it up. The Koran says nothing about 72 virgins. It says that the most virtuous of the faithful will get 40 attendants who will be youthful, pleasing to look at, and will never age. It says nothing about their sex or in what manner they will attend their masters. Maybe Mohammed didn't mention the gender of the attendants because he figured that some of those who enjoyed Allah's highest favor would be women. Or maybe it was the other thing that I mentioned. Arabic culture was a little different back then.
