Of course the day when humanity made the first step in space expolration is not important for Americans, because it was Russian spacemen who made this step. If it was an American spacemen, then you shouted about this great date and glorious event every year and everywhere.

A little point of view from a Finnish rock band, Miljoonasade:

Fly on Juri Gagarin

What do the stars smell like
do they feel like ivory
has planet Earth sung the song of silence
First you dance with Africa
then see wasted Finland
or do you sail the clouds, clouds the oceans

Fly on Juri Gagarin
fly on Juri Gagarin
keep the promise running, keep it alive

Can you see the missiles
melted to their targets
can you see us ashamed of our innocence

Can you see the money flow
where does it go
can you see the traders of defence

Can you see me smiling at you
I'm still here waiting
can you see lovers wait for the new year

And when you wear your headphones
and turn up the volume
can you hear how children are born down here

And the original song in Finnish:

Miltä tähdet tuoksuu
entä luinen kuu
soiko maapallon liikkeessä fuuga hiljainen
Miltä Afrikka näyttää
heiluuko Suomen lanteet
vai onko tänne pilvet pesineet

Lennä Juri Gagarin
lennä Juri Gagarin
tule elävänä takaisin

Näetkö laukausten juovat kun ne
maailmaa rikki neuloo
ja ihmiset häpeilee
viattomuuttaan

Näetkö rahan liikkeen
näetkö minne se menee
aselastit vaihtaa
omistajaa

Näätkö minun katseeni sieltä
vielä se on lämmin
näätkö rakastavaiset
kaupungin päällä

Ja kun kuulokkeet laitat korviin
ja väännät volumen kymppiin
kuuletko lapsien syntyvän täällä

Ok!
Question for everyone.
What do you think about this event, I mean about when human was launched to space. Was it good, was it bad, was it an avanture, was it breakthrought.
What was it for humanity?
Your opinion, please.

I think it was revolutionary

A great historical event, fascinating.
About mankind, I don't know. It was the space race between USA and USSR that pushed technology in that sector (space) ahead with full speed.

The same space race it is starting to develop now between USA and EU about who will be the first to go to Mars

We can cooperate and go even faster

I think it was great, too. Anything that encourages us to explore space is a good thing, in my opinion.

IMO it's at least as big as the first flight of the Wright brothers and bigger than the first moon landing.

It was a great and signifiicant event in human history, and inspite of ideology, one does regard the memory of Gagarin and the human achievement he represented with fondness and respect.
It would have been something I would have liked to have lived through, like Sputnik and the Moon Landing. People today are quite a bit blase in regards to these achievements; we almost take it for granted that we can go into space, and walk on the moon.

First the EU needs to get a real manned program.

But agreed, the ESA and NASA should be working together toward that goal.

As to Gagarin's flight, quite revolutionary. If it wasn't for the Soviet's achievments, the US never would've been pushed to surpass them.

An incredible accomplishment, which although it paved the way for many others, hasn't been exploited to its fullest, or even in the best possible manner to benefit all humanity (which should be done without polluting the rest of the Universe, though, that's important, yet so hard to do)...

heh there was a plan about dumping radioactive material in space.

jetonize them outside in the solar system

it didn;t come through 'cause it was too expensive. but what's funny is that in the reasoning of why not to do it there was a clause that said that they might fall on the head of an alien and thatalien might get pissed and come here asking for explanations.
