(inspired by the SDMB)
For you non-Americans, (and wiglafs), the lousiana purchase was a huge chunk of land (828,000 sp mi) west of the MIssissippi River purchased for some $15 million. Obviously, quite a good deal.
So why can't we do it again?
I propose that the United States buys itself a state/territory or three, as a way to expland without that whole "Evil Imperialist" thing. The way I see it, there are several Options.
Greenland
Pros:
-Denmark Ain't Using it.
-Potential Eco-tourism
Cons:
-Pick up Welfare tab
-Industry? We don't need no stinking industry!
British Columbia & Yukon Territory
Pros:
-Already speak English
-Already, for all intents and purposes, American.
-connects a land route to Alaska.
Cons:
-Canadians often think they are not Americans, go figure.
-Well devolped Economy means more $$$ must be spent on buying it.
Baja California
Pros:
-Silver
-decreases the American-Mexican Border somewhat
-Returns MichealtheGreat to the fold.
Cons:
-Tijuana
-really, really, poor.
-Gives America 2 wangs
-Returns MichealtheGreat to the fold. ( )
Which brings us to our best option;
Kamchatka Pennisula
Pros:
-Rich in natural resources
-Lightly populated
-relatively isolated from rest of Russia
-devaluation of Russian Currency makes it Cheaper than it would be.
Cons:
-Russians might not sell.
-Russians might get paranoid.

Couple more PROs for British Columbia:
It's holy-****ing-**** beautiful.
Vancouver is amazing.
CONs:
I suspect part of the reason for both of the above reason is that British Columbia is, well, Canadian.
If we can get Alberta, let's do it. Canadian conservatives are American moderates; lord knows we need more of 'em. Where are their oil fields located?
