News of the Macedonian World Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

281bc - Antigonus Sodak is crowned king of Macedonia. He surveys the kingdom, finding both good and bad. We have fine cities defended by strong bad guys. But the economy is in shambles. With tax set to maximum, we lose 10g per turn, and our coffers only have 40 gold! Will we need to sell off improvements to keep the bean counters happy?

To vent his frustration, the new king leads the sack of Delphi. We now control the Hellenistic League! Contact with some of the smelly foreigners results in nothing. But the Carthaginians exchange knowledge with us. Now we can build chariots! We then coerce a local magistrate to teach us the secrets of Diplomacy so that we may steal knowledge from others.

278bc - Our gallant forces sack Eretria! A tortured magistrate reveals the secret of Land Trade. Celtic horsemen swarm from the north, causing trouble.

275bc - We settle a new town just west of Pella. Our noble leader humbly names it Sodaq. Because it rests on silver, we immediately have our economy in the black. Sure, taxes are set at 80%, but it's a start...

273bc - Government tax goons shake down several merchants for a pile of gold. We now have more than 100 gold! Trade Carthaginians for Jurisprudence.

265bc - Sack Knossos, a spineless local squeals about the knowledge of Popular Support.

263bc - Sack Byzantion, discover blueprints outlining the secrets of Hydraulics! Trade Egyptians for Bridge Building.

261bc - King Antigonus Sodak abdicates the throne. He retires to his hill town to watch barbarians die at the city walls while he sips fine wine from a locally crafted silver goblet.

The next king has a newly trained emissary at his disposal. Our population has nearly doubled to 2.27 million. Our coffers now hold 290 gold, and we have a dozen trade routes established. With the economy stabilized, Sodak's successor should have an easier time training bad guys and expanding our borders. Several greek cities lie waiting to be sacked... (Also, before selling off improvements, note that granaries have NO upkeep cost.)

Following the surprise abdication of His Most Royal Highness King Anoginus Sodak, his son the aging King Sgi came to the throne. Now King Sgi was known for his financial acumen having gleaned a considerable fortune during his father's reign, but did not know which end of a sword was held in the hand. Consequently, in a break from tradition he appointed the Hierophant of Delphi one Gitus Scousae to lead the mighty armies of Macedonia.

The Military History
Gitus Scousae pioneered the deadly Omega Pack assault for the capture of the decadent Greek cities. A stack comprising two or three vet battering rams a veteran Phalanx and a General would advance upon the heretic. The leading ram would sacrifice itself against the city walls bringing the primary defender to their knees, the second ram would destroy the secondary defender, the general mop up any residual defence and take the city and the phalanx secure the city and provide martial law. This formula Gitus Scousae applied four times in his period as Haruspex-General of the Armies of Macedonia and four great cities fell to our conquering armies. The Western approaches are now secure - although the apparently empty Celtic fortress to the North of Sodaq may now shelter Roman forces, a Phalanx has been despatched to investigate. On the Eastern Front travellers tell of great Wonders to found to the North of the Black Sea so it there that our mighty Omega Packs have turned their attention. An uneasy peace with the Greek Kingdoms provides a buffer on our South Western borders. Successors should know that the Greek Kingdoms have a substantial navy which might prove an embarrassment in the future.

The Financial Front
Several advances have been made here, a fleet has developed for the express purpose of trading with Rhodes a distinctly profitable activity and although one of the merchant vessels has been ear-marked for covert action against the Syrians (who have needed technologies) and on its next outing against the Barbarian island city to our south - what a useful jumping off point for our eventual conquest of the rich Egyptian lands! Our trade network is becoming quite profitable. We made peace with the Syrians, but were persuaded by 400 pieces of Egyptian gold to tear up this treaty.
King Sgi made some further inroads into profitability and science development by utilising the fact that the output of specialists does not suffer from corruption ao many of our larger cities now utilise these specialists - often at a temporary food deficit.
Our brother nations are vying with one another to build the great Mediterranean Trade Wonder (Adam Smith's) their kindness will be noted and an Omega Pack despatched when they complete it

In 244 backwards counting King Sgi felt that he had done enough, Gitus Scousae was recalled and the responsibility of government was passed to a Northerner with the bizarre name of LaFayette ...

but what do I see nearby?
a pair of barb stealth bombers

Julius, my friend, I need your help (since I suppose that this is exactly the same problem as the one I had with the crusader's scenario: french version, ...I tried to solve it alone but didn't manage it)

Yes, that is the origin of the NON-slaves you inherited! We really should keep an eye out for them, to spare us the need of actually enslaving our own people. Maybe a horseman or two can roam the hinterlands in search of more...

I suddenly remembered that 'Galeries Lafayette' are the biggest department store in Paris and decided to be mainly a peaceful trader .
Our power is 'moderate' and our economy remains weak (cash-flow of 20 gold in 244BC with taxes set at max 80%), so I mainly built caravans in order to speed up our research with one time bonuses and increase our treasury. Pella and Athinai are now close to size 12 and 3 new cities have been conquered on the western coast of the black sea.
The best I have done, apart from stealing a few techs so that we are now #1 in research, is acquiring the 'highways' tech (equivalent to RR in this game), and building the backbone of our transportation network.
The next ruler of our empire should therefore be able to send his fresh troops very quickly to the battlefield (which might well be the Greek cities north of the black sea - how does one spell 'Crimée' in English?).
Last (but not least) news: we should be able to discover 'Espionage' within 5 or 6 years from now .
