I looked at a few of the threads and I'm baffled.

Tired of ads?

Suppose somebody, namely me, had never played a game of Diplomacy in their life, and had never even seen a gameboard up close. However, I am acquainted with the idea behind it, and have looked at rulebooks online, and am very interested in playing. How would be the best way then to get into the game?

Join a game as a replacement. For example: England in Frontier Imperial is in desparate need of replacement, as Larry has dropped the position.

If you don't want to jump into a game in progress, you could always wait until the next new game starts and try your luck at that. Up to you.

Btw: if you're interested in joining Frontier Imperial as England, it would be the last link I gave in the maps (dark blue colored territory is England's)

Scratch this. I forgot that England had been replaced

But there are games in need of replacements, until the next one opens up

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

I, too, have been curious about this for a while and would like to know exactly what the game is, and how is it played.

Is it an actual computer game, is it a board game, or is it just "pen and paper"? And how is it played, are there any websites I could go to for an explaination?

You lead a nation, move units around, make alliances, capture territories, and try to rule the world (or section of the globe)

It's all 3. The board game was originally created back in the 50s, I think, but has been modified several times. You can purchase it, but it's obsure so you have to really look for it. It became a computer game, which as far as I know, sucks...it's just a game that needs PEOPLE rather than an AI. It's 'pen and paper' in the fact that you simply write up moves to make, and the letters you write to other nations asking for their help/support/alliegance/ etc. etc.

It's relatively easy to pick up on.

If you want an example of a game from Start to Finish, look at these maps...

Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Thanks.

I'll check it out, maybe I'll get involved in some of the games being played here... do new games start very often? (not that I wouldn't neccisarily mind replacing someone)

Unfortunately, at the moment, no. See, we had a lot of regulars here, but all of a sudden people started dropping like flies. So we have (at ACS) about 10 games going on, 3 or 4 of which are in need of a replacement. However, Hagakure Dip, Not so Newbie Dip, and another version of Standard are near completion, so we may get another one going soon. Ruffhaus would know better than I would.

CGN, however, has been starting a fresh set of games recently. We plan to start a new Standard in mid-late June. If you'd like to join that, I'll be sure to let you know when it starts.
