Interesting Inside Info on SW2: Attack of the Clones Get a bigger avatar today!

Saw this on Time.com... it sounds really good!

http://www.time.com/time/sampler/ar...,232440,00.html

Some excerpts:

quote:
He probably thinks it odd to be asked to justify a picture that earned $431 million at the North American box office, behind only Titanic, the original Star Wars and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial as an all-time top grosser. But the writer-producer-director-megamind—who in his spare time runs a film conglomerate that includes the Lucasfilm production outfit, the ILM visual-effects house and Skywalker Sound—says he was always aware of at least one Phantom risk: that Anakin Skywalker, the Jedi knight in training who would evolve into the sinister Darth Vader, was a kid. "I said, 'They're gonna hate this. They're gonna get really upset that I have a 9-year-old as the hero.' But what can I do? That's the story. I can't make him 15. The whole story is about where he came from, who is he? You had to start in the beginning."

Now, with Star Wars: Episode II—Attack of the Clones opening May 16, the Anakin fable gets to the middle, the meat, the real story. The past was prologue, a modest prequel, like Tolkien's The Hobbit to his epic Lord of the Rings saga. In Clones, Anakin (Canadian dish Hayden Christensen) is 20, a young man of superior skills and even higher ambitions, chafing under the stern tutelage of his mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), and daring to risk his status in the Jedi Order, which forbids romantic attachments, by pursuing a reckless passion for Senator Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman). They parry with oily, possibly insidious Senator Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) and battle the Jedi rebel Dooku (Christopher Lee) and his droids with an army cloned from scurvy bounty hunter Jango Fett (Maori actor Temuera Morrison).

Hmmm, admits that PM probably was going have major problems but it was needed for background.

quote:
After seeing a rough cut of the film and reading the script, we can say that Clones seems poised to get the series back on track—and provide an exhilarating two hours of serious fun. It should easily ace the last movie in chills (when two icky centipedal creatures called "kouhuns" crawl into the sleeping Padme's bed) and thrills (when Anakin and Obi-Wan drag-race the changeling Zam Wessel across Coruscant's wonderfully varied urban nightscape).

quote:
The Anakin of Clones is an attractive fellow, full of a young man's roiling contradictions. He respects the Jedi ethic while squirming to elude its strictures; he loves both his faraway mother and the royal temptation at his side; he does engage in a revenge massacre but feels remorse for it; he is disarming and, finally, literally disarmed. By the end of Clones, Anakin is still a decent, stalwart gent, light-years removed from the malefic Vader.

I like having a complex Anakin. Of course the protagonist of SW: PM was Obi-Wan and Qui-Jan (sp?)

quote:
In Clones, Lucas goes a way toward answering that question. "That's the issue that I've been exploring: How did the Republic turn into the Empire? That's paralleled with: How did Anakin turn into Darth Vader? How does a good person go bad, and how does a democracy become a dictatorship? It isn't that the Empire conquered the Republic, it's that the Empire is the Republic." Lucas' comments clarify the connection between the Anakin trilogy and the Luke trilogy: that the Empire was created out of the corruption of the Republic, and that somebody had to fight it. "One day Princess Leia and her friends woke up and said, 'This isn't the Republic anymore, it's the Empire. We are the bad guys. Well, we don't agree with this. This democracy is a sham, it's all wrong.'"

I like this... a little... philisophical, if I can say it .

quote:
"The next film is really dark," he says. "The issue is, Will people stand for it? But I've got to tell the story.

Woohoo!

SW2 is looking better and better!! Can't wait!

When the SW: Ep2 trailers showed at LOTR just about everyone in the theatre broke out in laughter.

It seems like a mix of a bad action movie, bad romantic movie, and a bad teenage-rebellion movie ("I'm going to be the best Jedi EVER!" as he rides along on his motorcycle-esque vehicle).

Don't get your hopes up too high, I'm not looking forward to seeing an entire page of angry-faced posts on Poly when this thing comes out because it's bad, just like what happened with TPM.

Lucas isn't in here to make good movies, here's here to make money. Much of his money comes from SW Merchandise, which tends to fall on kids buying them, so go figure he caters his movies to kids.

I don't think it "leaked", rather Harry Knowles was invited to a private screening (in a hotel room, iirc) of an AOTC rough cut a month or so ago.

I saw a review by somebody who pre-screened the movie at TruthMedia. They weren't very favorable.

quote:
Come to think of it, Lucas should have invested more time in all aspects of Episode Two's production. On a technical level, the film feels very rushed in disjointed, probably because LucasArts is rushing to finish this film in time to compete with "Spider-Man," which will no doubt trounce Episode Two in domestic box office profits, according to all the analysts I've spoken to off the record. And I'm an industry insider here, not some fat fanboy with a web page.

Actually, people might be more positive towards this than they were towards Phantom Menace. Everyone went to see Phantom Menace excepting something truly mind-blowing - everyone goes to see Attack of the Clones hoping it's somewhat better than the crapfest Phantom Menace was but preparing for the worst.

Shouldn't he look like that? He's supposed to be a pompous teen, not the whiny brat that luke was.

I thought the princess wasn't that bad of an actor, personally.
But then, her only role in the first movie was: "They're attackign our planet. Make the bad men stop."

The comments on how a democracy becomes a dicatorship is pretty interesting, especially as some say the USA is heading towards it. Wow. A star wars movie with symbolism. Hasn't been one of those for about 20 years.

One look... I didn't like him. I'm not thinking he's creepy like Vader. I'm thinking he deserves a pool cue in the face.

Regarding the Princess being 'not that bad of an actor (or actress even I guess) there was nothing regal about her. The scenary had more stage presence. Jar-Jar had more stage presence.

Has anyone felt the need to address the dumb title? Attack of the Clones? My 12 year old sister could have come up with a better title than that, for God's sakes.

That is the point. I think you are supposed to come out of it wanting to whip that arrogent Skywalker... and no one sees Vader coming out of it.

Lucas wanted a cheesy title.

Not like 'The Empire Strikes Back' was non-cheesy .

quote:

Yep, but more like Germany especially with Chancellor Palpatine asking for emergency powers because of a successionist war involving labor unions.

--

This movie is looks very, very, very good. The Republic starts to unravel under war. Anakin is a spoiled brat, which the Chancellor is praising and building up his arrogant nature. While the Jedi are powerless to resist him while being blinded by the Clone War. Ahhh, Star Wars .

Shouldn't that tell you what demographic the movie is aiming for?

The actor that plays Anakin in this new movie is a no-name Canadian actor that only had any real previous acting experience in the absolutely horrible "Higher Ground" TV show about a troubled teen. Now Lucas appoints him to be Version 2.0 of the whiney Anakin brat that can't act, and hope that the masses don't care and go to see it because it's STAR WARS and because its got some CGI in it. Amazing.

I thought the point of a film was to have some characters where you actually care about if they live or die.

Ewan McGregor is utterly miscast. He was fantastic as a Scottish junkie in Trainspotting, fabulous as a Scottish reporter in Shallow Grave. Its been downhill since then. His role as a Jedi, is a low point.

Jar-Jar; we want to see it die.

The Princess; I don't care if she dies or not.

Samuel L Jackson is a pretty good Jedi, FWIW.

Christopher Lee is an unknown. Anything will be better than Darth Maul.

Personnally, as far as I can see, I have empathy with one character.

I think Lucas has spent so much effort trying to prove whether he could have this digital universe, he never thought whether he should.

Ten minutes of Pearl Harbor was worth watching. I predict the same from ATOC.

I actually didn't like the first three movies much either. Rather typical good vs. evil, bad special effects (my standards are so much higher since I was only born in '83 ).

But ILM was a great spinoff, and being the first film to use Surround Sound are plusses.

But I've never understood why it's such a big phenomenon.
