Yes, trading is very important. You can get tech, luxuries, strategic ressources and other things of course, but it's the best way also to improve relationship, which is very important if you plan to win diplomatically.
Furthermore, if you can have lead in tech race, trade some techs to other civs. You can earn lot of money and then invest all your incomes to research; two advantages for improving you tech lead:
- keep on researching actively,
- avoid others civs to research actively (they already spend their incomes to buy you techs
)
Then tech lead provides two very interesting advantages:
- be the first to start building a wonder,
- get the first new more powerful units.
For example, in my current game (Regent, huge map, 16 civs), I just sold Scientific Method to 5-6 civs one turn before completing Theory of Evolution. I'm now researching Replaceable Parts (need only 4 turns), building Hoover Dam, still earning more than 350 gold per turn and providing all eight luxuries to my people.
