Well it looks like Ishtar and I are going to do the weight loss thing together. It will be nice to have someone along the way to be able to talk to and encourage each other. I've found that in losing weight that sometimes when you hit the plateau after you've lost so much you get discouraged. It will be nice to have another person to offer and to get encouragement from.

Before you know it you guys will have to rename us the Apolyton Godess Twins

Suffering from ads?

Well I'm about 1 1/2 weeks into it. So far I've lost 3 pounds....most of which is water weight I'm sure of that!! As many times as I've had to peeeeeeee over the last week Plus I've also increased my water intake considerably. The first couple of days were hard, I think my body went into shock and Fast Food withdrawal

But now it's great! I've got so much more energy and I feel so much better. It really is amazing what getting rid of all the crap we eat day to day does and how much better you feel. I'm even increasing my exericsing and am starting back on my Tae Bo today.......pray for me! Billy Blanks may just be my undoing

Suffering from ads?

Hey I'm late for this thread, but I'm in a similar situation. I'm not that fat, but I don't have a large frame, so any fat looks bad.

I'm also doing major workouts for my upper body, so I plan on putting on muscle as well. So losing weight isn't a biggie for me, just losing fat.

I never went in to that atkins diet thing. It seems like there would be too much cholesterol in that for me. But cutting carbohydrates can't hurt. If you don't need them, don't eat (or drink them). Eliminating soda is a first step towards that.

When I'm working out, I'm losing weight. I know this. The tough part is continuing working out. I went for a little over 2 months last time which was earlier this year. Then my brother moved in with me, and I stopped working out. And he ate a lot, and that caused me to eat a lot. I put on a great deal of weight in the 2 months I haven't been working out. I hate that. but it's back to the stair stepper for me. Along with bench weights and dumbells. I also walk my dog and go hiking as well.

Just don't get too obsessed over pounds. It is only a rough indicator over progress. And be patient. good luck.

Nope! Not obsessed with the pounds. How my clothes fit for me is a better determination then what the scale says. The fact that the shirts aren't so tight around the boobs.......well that's a plus for me I'm just begining to notice a bit of a change in my clothes. That's how I know I'm on the right track and how I feel. Getting active again has been a real plus.

Um, for the record: protein diets like Atkins are a BAAAAD idea. It is junk nutrition science formulated, just another fad diet. The ultimate consequences to health and well-being are quite bad.

I agree it is still better to eat a more well rounded diet. Just not too much of a well rounded diet. The only thing I don't recommend is candy. I never had much of a sweet tooth, and can't understand why people can't go without candy. And why do they make pies and cakes at restaurants so sweet? I can't stand all that sugar.

And my clothes don't feel as tight around my boobs either, so that is a good thing .

Hi Tia,

It is funny that you should mention "defining moments in life," because I believe I have had one of those just about a week ago. Mine, however, is of a slightly different nature.

It is a good thing to be at a healthy weight, and I hope that is what you are trying to achieve. If it is simply to look or feel better about yourself, I believe it to be a waste of time. I have met a lot of girls who believed that they would only be "truly happy" if they were a certain weight. But when they reached their goal, they realized that nothing had really changed. Sure, they looked different, but did it make them happy?

Unfortunately, our society is so superficial at times.

If you are taking comfort in food, there is, I think, only one solution. Find something you are passionate about. Something that fills your mind with amazement, something that lets nothing else in. I am not the best at expressing myself in writing, so it is a little difficult to explain what I mean. I had an eye-opening experience just a week ago, and since then my mind has been on fire. If you find something that will set your mind on fire, you will not need food for comfort or boredom anymore. There won't be time to think about eating (but please dont starve yourself!!) Eating well and exercising are both good things that I encourage, but for most people they tend to be something "forced." We want to eat chocolate rather than brocoli, but we force ourselves not to.

Think about what you really care for in life, and fill yourself with that. When you have that, things like food suddenly become a lot less important. Now even sleep seems like a waste of time to me.

I'm not sure if I've made any sense AT ALL in this message. Feel free to ignore it!

Anyways, good luck with your goal, Tia. Hope it works out for you. But love yourself, no matter what.

Julia

I find I truelly do feel good when and after I'm working out. And I feel less depressed as well. Especially working with weights. I can understand how those muscle head guys get addicted to working out. That pumped up feeling is very nice.

The problem I have is a body at rest will stay at rest. I blame Newton for this. It is far to easy to be lazy and watch tv and play Baldur's Gate.

Well there is no way I'm going to tell you how much I weigh right now And yes, I do agree fad diets like the Adkins only serve to make worse in my opinion. I had to cut out breads and pasta's. I really like them wayyyyyyyy to much!!

I've changed my eating habbits but most importantly my eating time. I'm one of those late night munchers. If I'm up watching tv late then I usually would have something to eat. Now I cut my eating time down to 7:30 if I absolutly have to have a snack I make sure it's something fat free and sugar free. Sugar free Jello is becoming my friend. It fills you up without to many calories.

hey, can anyone help me out - I notice that after a long workout with free weights my muscles are tight and huge, but it rarely lasts more than a few hours...then they go back to normal size pre workout..

after 3 weeks of working out nearly every day for nearly an hour a day, I have yet to see a lot of change in my biceps, only in my back (major change) and chest.

Is there a certain way to work the bicep muscles that I'm missing?

Selfbiased has been looking at bikes so that's probably going to be my next one after swimming and I'm going back to my jazzercise class now that I know I have the momentum and won't fall down on the first go round

If someone is depressed, it goes beyond merely being overweight. The Fat Bastard syndrome is a fallacy--overeating and weight fluctuations are generally a sign of chronic depression, which is treatable. And the depression, while it may be enhance by poor self image tied to being overweight, usually goes much deeper than that, to a general sense of low self-esteem and self worth

Those are good, but I was thinking more along the lines of something competitive. If you participate in a competitive sport you might find it more fun. Are you a competitive kind of person?

Try doing fewer reps with more weight (like 6). Really push the weight limit on it. Also, you can try doing slower reps (like 14 second reps!!!). These are much more effective than fast ones, and you only have to do a few. Be sure to totally exhaust the muscles when working them out.

Be sure to eat a lot of protein right after a workout.

Do you focus on muscle groups when working out? That's how to build. Only do 2 muscle groups a day (like chest and back one day, arms and legs another). Do 3 types of exercises for each group.

Who me?????? Yes, extremely competative. I don't like to loose and usually don't. I have a friend who plays softball, that might be something to look into.

Ok, that'll have to wait until summer. I've been doing lower weight and more reps (25 at a time or so) because that's all I have at Uni. Soon I'll be home though, and can use other free weights.

I do my workouts at night, and most protein rich food is also fat rich. That's bad. My first goal is losing fat, second goal is gaining muscle. Do you know of any good protein rich foods that aren't high in fat?

Nope, generally I work around the body...start with chest, then arms, then legs, then arms again, then abs, then legs, etc...but always in the same basic pattern as the day before.

There you have it. Doing more reps with less weight will tone, not build.

14 seconds???

Yup. 7 up, 7 down. Correct breating, of course. You'd not want to do this with a really heavy weight, something moderate. Slow reps are incredibly effective. However, the catch is you have to rest more between workouts.

quote:

1.) Tofu and soy or protein shakes with no/low fat. Also, fish fish fish love that fish. Tuna fish is high in protein and very low fat.
2.) Ignore fat, focus on calories. Even lowfat food can be high in calories, and it is excess calories that are the biggest problem with weight gain, not really fat. Some fat (from oils and fish, eg) is very good for you.
3.) If you do a weight workout and then do 25-30 mins of cardio AFTER the weights, you will burn 1.5 times as many calories during the cardio than doing the reverse (cardio then weights), and you will burn a LOT more than cardio alone. That should help with the fat loss.
4.) Don't work out every day. In order for your body to build the muscle, rest is vital. Working the same muscles every day (or even every other day) will inhibit muscle growth, not help it.

Nein Nein Nein! Don't do the same basic pattern. Your body will get used to the pattern, and then workouts will be less and less effective. Mix it up (change your workout pattern around on a regular basis).

Cheers.

maybe I have that backwards.

I always thought doing more reps with less weight will add bulk

but doing less reps with more weight will tone (ie give the "cut" look).

Yeah, I know that. However, I'm not concerned with weight gain, I'm just trying to lose some extra pounds hiding around. I've noticed a huge change in my legs and back, but my stomach area will not budge, even with repeated cardio workouts. I'm starting to wonder what exactly I'm burning I eat 5 small sensible meals a day, drink only water, and do a hell of a lot of walking around campus on a daily basis.

Yeah, I certainly haven't cut out fat completely.

Now, why is that? If I go a day without working out I start to feel sluggish... Even if I go with your advice and switch muscle groups it's bad to workout every day?

Suppose that makes sense. Perhaps that's why the results have been dropping off...though I find that the level of difficulty is still somewhat similar to what it was when I started...i just figured that meant it was still doing the job.

Thanks again, keep the advice coming

Yes. You have it backwards.

This business of building bulk though. Its hard to do for many people when they are young. Prior to idiots doing steroids weight lifters and body builders didn't reach a peak till at least their late 20s. Its hard to bulk up when you are young. I know I couldn't but then I was a runner.

You can over train. Not just your muscles but your bones also need a break now and then. This is how guys get stress fractures.

Women get stress fractures too but they can also get them by getting too low a body fat. Women shouldn't go below 15% body fat. When that happens the body behaves as if she is starving an shuts off the menstrual cycle and the hormones that drive it. This causes calcium to be pulled from the bones. I don't think any of the women on this thread have to worry about this problem at the moment though.
