Childhood misconseptions Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

When I was little, I had a lot of misconseptions about the world around me.

I was convinced Chicago was California. I thought those little pasta shells were real shells that had been taken to a factory and processed so you could eat them. And no matter when, no matter what it was, it always happened "the other day". Last Thursday's dentist appointment? We went the other day. Pleasent trip to the zoo yesterday? We went the other day. The fall of the Soviet union? The other day.

As recently as 7th grade, I didn't recognize the word "rendevous". I knew the spoken word, but I had no idea what it looked like written out. So when I encountered a poster with "rendevous" on it, I of course tried to pronounce it "ren-div-onis".

Oh, and let's not forget the time I stuck the car keys into a power outlet to try and "drive" the house. Good thing they stopped me.

What about you guys?

I didn't really get the concept and point of borrowing money. I thought you actually borrowed the bill, kept it for a while and then returned the very same bill back.

I thought an answering machine was a real person who answered all your calls.

I didnt recognize "Bussiness"... But English is not my first language so it's forgivable.

When I was 3 or 4 I asked my father if the people in the movies die when someone shoots them. I was reffering to the artists, while my father thought i'm talking about the characters in the movie. So he said that yes, and until the age of 8-9 I couldnt understand how stupid the artists were. Getting killed only to be in a movie.

I'm reminded of a joke.

Dad and son are driving to visit granma. Daddy has to check his maps at crossroads, so he tells son "Son, you keep an eye on the road and tell me if there are any cars coming." Son does that. Daddy gets his maps in order, asks son "Are there any cars coming?" and the son answers "No." Daddy starts driving, when the car's hit by Lada. Son and dad are whisked to hospital, where they are treated, and after that, dad asks son:"I told you to tell me if there were any cars coming. You didn't do so. Why?"
"Lada isn't a car."

Before I learned about such things, I had a vague notion that the navel was involved in human reproduction. The penis had an obvious function (urination), but the navel didn't. And women carried babies "in their tummies". So maybe conception involved some sort of navel-to-navel contact.

There was someone with the same first name as me at my school, and I couldn't believe it - I was concvinced that is was a part of some sort of conspiracy and everyone was lying to me.

I also, for some unknown reason, thought tortellini was made of frog's legs.

I thought my best friend was psychic, he took advantage of this mercifully as in "no Dave we shouldn't dig big holes in the back yard when your mom isn't looking we should go play wiffle ball like I want since I'm psychic and I know that they'll collapse on us and we'll DIE."
