Seriously, I see no problem with the Hive's utopian vision. But a little bit more democracy wouldn't hurt.

Democracy? Democracy worked great in the days when the population was small enough for them all to gather in the forum and talk face-to-face about their problems. Why do you think the citizens who are happiest (particularly in the books) are the ones who live in the "dictatorian" Hive and Believing factions?

I appear to be the minority who likes the Data Angels.

Power to opensource!

My reasons go like this:
Democracy sucks, because the minority gets screwed.
Capitalism sucks, because the majority gets screwed.

While in the game DA's are democratic, it strikes me of more of an anarchy than Lal's bureaucratic democracy. The main reason they are democratic is because they rigerously oppose both Police State and Fundie.

Basically, I feel the DA's society would be about the least opressive one of the lot.

Yeah, but if everything with the Data Angels is anarchistic and does their one thing, can you still speak of a 'society'?

In other words, they wouldn't stand a chance in the real world when competing against one of the other factions.

Well, perhaps not only in real life. In my own games of SMAX, the Data Angels are nearly always eradicated by other factions (ok, landing next to the Usurpers doesn't really help)

I dont agree with ANY of the ideologies. im a social anarchist so i beleive that no form of authority, state capitalist or otherwise is justified. I hate capitalism, statism militarism and fundamentalism, therefore i agree with NONE of the ideologies in the game. The best faction for me wouyld be NO FACTION. Logically it follows that if i play the game, i might as well go nuts and have fun and not take it seriously since i cant anyway.

My choice was the hive, because Statist Communism is fun. I nuke, i commit TONS of atrocities, and i love every second of it.

You get to be your own Stalin in your own little world, totally unfettered by ethics. And if your an anachist, you prove yourself right wether you win or lose

Drones a close second, if i had to actually choose which one id like to live in, it would be the drones or gains

I dont think the Data Angels would be true anarchists, rather the emphasis in the society would be true free flow of information. Essentially the nearest thing you would get on planet to a frictionless economy. The democraticness is more likely to the virtual than representive, that is on really important policy (ie that which the goverment actually makes) everyone really does get a vote.

As for why I like them in game, well they might not have any killer builder benefits like Zak or Morgan, but they also lack the somewhat painful negatives of some other factions. Combined with excellent starting techs (Planetary networks - thats just 3 techs from IndAuto!) and the ability to go planned very early makes them a very decent builder - I think of them as a less extreme morgan, less cash yes, but the cash goes further on probing and you dont have to deal with the severe hab limits and support penalty of morgan. (you could also easily compare them to Zak or the Gaians, I just happen to be a big Morgan fan)

Overall the Datajacks are a most flexible faction, with an excellent start, no penalties to slow them down and the best probes on planet to boot. What more could one possibly want

PS: The rollever bug sucks, tho I tend to just ignore or accept it. Being anarchists the datajacks are more likely to be mind controllable than the fanatic Believers anyway.

The rollover bug is a growth bug. When you have reached 127 in population the base rolls over to 1 next time the base will go up one level. But I have a small reminder that it would be fixed with the 2.0 patch for alien crossfire.

I always play as the Spartans. Not because I agree with their ideology, but because I like the idea of elite fighters, and mainly just because their color is black, and black rulez
I NEVER played any other faction. So I was ready to click "Spartan". But then I saw a picture of Deirdre, and I just couldn't NOT vote for her

Trying out the morgans for the first time - very tough. Trying to be a small, tech-advanced true nation, but that damm pop limit almost forces me to spit our more c-pods. Thankfully, I found vel's strat guide.

Oh yeah. Early on, it is difficult using the Morganites. Once you're well established and have plenty of facilities in each base though, you're racking in the cash to support huge military, buy all University technology and dominate Planet.

Ideologically though, I hate them. I hate them so very much (but not as much as the Believers). Despite hating them, I have to try them, see how exactly they work, so that I can destroy them easier.

The AI for Morgan is probably the weakest in the game. You can learn a lot of bad habits by watching it too closely.

AI Morgan would be better if 1. He didn't have the size 4 population limit and 2. If the Free Market social choice wasn't so punishing. You really cannot fight an AI-style war in Democracy / Free Market as Morgan. He usually switches to Fundamentalist / Simple, but that screws up his research so that he can't fight anyway.

JT, where did this 127 come from? Either I'm missing some obscure point, or I failed to find the reference in this thread, which I reread twice.

Never mind. Third time's the charm!

Why would he need research? As I said, he can just set it down, let the cash flow in and BUY IT from another faction.

And it is tough to fight a war as the Morganites. Switching to Fundamentalist means that to capture bases, it is a simple matter of sending probe teams in and subverting the bases. The Fundamentalist probe bonus helps here. With the huge amounts of cash, the whole war can be fought this way, right up until a small force can march in and take their HQ.

Apparentely there is some confusion... the rollover bug I mentioned specially afflicts the data angels.
It is that +4 probe becomes 0 probe for purposes like mind control. It is particulary bad because when you get Pre-sent algorithms you your bases get the covert ops centers and that +2 probe, bringing the probe rating at all bases to +4 (0) and making it easier than it should be for enemy to mind control bases (if it worked correctely, you should get the 'mini HSA' effect that believers+fundie enjoy).
But you still get elite probes and stuff and enemy shouldn't be probing your bases in any case. (and I build so many probes that they have to get through my probes first).

I actually never noticed the rollover bug, I just assumed it was a feature, that the believers got 'fanatic' mind control resistence and the DA's didn't, because they aren't fanatics, just happen to be good with the probing equipment.

Actuly I haven't reached 127 I haven't gone over 45 in tranched so...I have no idea have I will be abel to get a base to 127, but I have a small reminder that it was something in the 4.0 patch about it, but with my memorie it was probely not in there. I didn't now that about the probe thing...mayby because that I don't like thieving to get good.

Now one question is it somebody who nows how to play a peacefull morgan? I am always drown into war that I can't fight, I guess that the problem is that I hate evrything Morgan stands for...

Yang definitely has some great quotes associated with mind and matter. But I don't see any that justify his brutal dictatorial approach to building up his faction.
