Core Rules - Courtesy of Master Helio Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

Since we have already posted the core rules on the 'poly site, I see no compelling reason why we should not do so again, this time, in our own area....so, for those lurking who have an interest in the game, here they are.

Please keep in mind that these rules were based on and written from my initial draft, also penned somewhere on 'poly. Thus, the rules as they stand right now closely mimick the game as it would be played out board-game style.

This should not be considered the final document, but it does nail down all the major in-game concepts, and should give everybody an idea of how we're proceeding.

As to inform the others here (and me), what version are these for? Are these going to be the basic final rules for v0.1, or the test board game?

I think v0.1 doesn't implement everything in the core rules, but a fair bit of them.

Tired of ads?

Well....the rules document is a "live" document....that is to say, it's something of a moving target. In between builds though, it should be regarded as static for the sake of the sanity of the programmers, and as we test a given build, if we find something that doesn't work, that's when we go in and tweak/change the rules to slowly shape it toward what we want it to be.

So...it's a target rules set for v0.1, with the understanding that there won't be immediate and full implementation (since in addition to building up the rules base, we're having to go thru the initial building the game's framework and such).

I believe we have made some tweaks and changes in the rules since it was last posted in the other games forum... check with Helio or Vel on that one.

By the way, it might be good to show future modifications to the core rules as a different color or style font, just so we can more closely monitor their development.

Full PM-box? Change here!

As Skanky suggested, it's perhaps a good idea to make changes using Word's "Track Changes" feature - which would serve cyclo's purpose of highlighting alterations. It's not hard to do either, just bring down the toolbar and click the appropriate button.

I've had a decent reception from the other mathmos here as to trying a test-game of the board game, at some point when we're all free and sick of revision. Is there a standardised game map, or can I use my own ready-printed one?

I think it was either Helio or Cyclo.

Anyway - is there a standard map now, or can I use my own "random" one? And all this tuff about the lake territories gaining bonuses - is that part of the computer rules set, or does it apply to the board game now?

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

You'll have to create your own version of the map (rough templates available from the link in Cyclo's sig) ... good luck, mine looked absolutely s**t!

The lake provinces gaining an income bonus is part of the board-game rules now (easy to implement), but has been subject to much change and testing recently in an effort to balance it. I forget what the current values are for testing ... Vel should know ... (doesn't he know everything?).

As for terrain modifiers, I don't think they'd be terribly practical to put into the board game version. It would require you to scrutinise Cyclo's terrain map and try and determine which provinces have which type of terrain. not impossible by any means ... but ... there's SO much record-keeping involved in the board-game as it stands now that i wouldn't recommend making things any more complicated.
If you want to test it however, that would be VERY helpful (and brave ) ... I'm not sure if they're gonna be balanced at the moment, that's another area that will need to evolve over time.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Posted (in several places) by Vel:

quote:

For the curious, here are how the incomes shake out as things stand at this moment:

Fury: 200
The Wizards: 220
Castillar: 230
Mourngrym: 230
Council of Seven: 290

I'm pretty happy with that general spread, though the Wizards and Mourngrym may see a slight increase, and the Seven may get knocked down a tad....in my head, I see the final numbers shaking out something close to:

Fury: 210
Castillar: 230
Wizards: 230
Mourngrym: 250
Council of Seven: 280

These values refer to the starting incomes for each faction ... I'm not sure how the lake-side provinces factor into this, however. We decided that the original plan (making all lake provinces count as being adjacent to all other lake provinces) was making Mourngrym and the Seven too rich, so it was scaled back into giving them a smaller bonus. +50g per turn (instead of the +80ish it was before) was talked about as a possible solution, but i'm not sure how much Vel's values above relect this ... he might have done some fiddling on his own time ( ).

Hmm, not an ideal answer - it took a while to get my map ready, and it has no lake in it. Ho-hum. I guess I could just drop one in somewhere with the right number of provinces, and say a +50g bonus for lake-side provinces.

Also, my map is more circular than the "long" shape Candle'Bre is described to be.

No probs. It isn't the end of the world if your map doesn't match the standard 'historical-game' settings. Don't change it too much if you've spent time on it already.
The important thing is that somebody is keen to playtest the game ... the number-crunching put me off the board game version, but maybe the mathmos can cope with it?
The map isn't the only thing that needs testing, especially since we plan to put in a random-map option at some point further down the line.

I can't wait to hear your results!

Hey guys! And as it stands at present, the values we're using for lakeside provs is +30 per (with the possibility of setting that value to zero, pending the building of a "harbor" improvement).,....still kicking that notion around....

Clarification needed - if the Wizards choose probability, and opt to reroll, can they choose which roll to take? It's a bit harsh if they reroll and get a muchly worse value, and are forced to keep it.
