Turnless multiplayer OPTIONAL - thank you! Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

I have just received info that, while the Turnless MP mode is there, playing much like an RTS game, it's purely optional, and Civ 3: PtW also has support for the more traditional MP modes. I'm so happy!

BTW, does anyone else think that having a RTS-ish mode can make Civ 3: PtW a MP hit? Most ppl prefer RTS in MP, as known.

WHO SAID THAT IT'S A RTS MODE?

I though that it's just a simultainous turn mode.
(you know, all players play thier TURNS in same time)

Yeah, not for Civ, but still, I believe this could be profitable for Firaxis... some more people attracted.

My info sources include Mossad, Israeli Sattelite system and the Greek University of Thessaloniki database I downloaded .

Well, I got some sources.

AFAIK, it has a play style more similar to the one of RTS. Then again, it could be wrong, but I trust no.

As far as "turnless" mode is concerned, I think it will be simmilar to the new Risk II game mode, in which the turns were played simultaneously.

In other words, every player play their turn without waiting for the rest, they play at the same time, when everybody has finished moving their units the computer fixes the conflicts and then the next turn comes.

It is not real time because you can spend a long time to take your deccisions (not too much because of the normal MP way of playing ).

I wouldn't play it if it would be true RTS. All players making their turns simultaneously is fine, if that speeds up MP. If it's optional, it's even better. But one of the reasons why I prefer Civ3 to e.g The Settlers is, that it is turn based.
So please, FIRAXIS, don't make it fully RTS!!!!

Ya, I like turn based...

I have always used Civ as a refuge from furious click fests, mad map scrolling and fumbling...I have grown tired of twitch games.

My wife and I can do chores, etc. as the other takes their turn...works out well towards the end game, where turns can take 30+ minutes...

I think that an option like is present in Risk2 would be the way to go, although keeping the options for the traditional way of playing MP. Hasanyone played Empire Earth? Is it anygood?

Empire Earth Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

I can't see how combat would work in a game like civ, using RTS. But anyway, I would still prefer TBS any day.

In response to your question about Empire Earth. Its way to cluttered and confusing. The game tries to accomplish way to much, and the modern warfare is terribly sloppy. Its just like the AOE games, of collect, and then basically overwhelm your opponent. No diplomacy, and virtually no tactics.

when it takes me probably 30-40 hours to play a game thoroughly, how long would it take 2 or 8 or 16 people? maybe ok on a small or tiny map. but you don't get the same type of game there.

Thats a pretty cool idea. would you just have the game end at say 1 ad? set it up so that there isn't a lot of space, so that there will be plenty of warfare? Or will you just have the tech tree end at a certain point, and try to get a victor by conquest?

evidently not. who knows exactly what firaxis is going to do with the whole thing. Perhaps people were jumping to conclusions, but in light of "no comment", it isn't that unreasonable to be curious.

The thing that would work for mP in my opinion is scenarios. Entire games would seem tot ake to long, but doing scenario campaigns could be made much shorter, but still be just as much fun as what a full game could be, of course we would stil want the option to play a full game!

Hot-Seat TBS is great. Grab few friends at your place for a weekend, play Hot-Seat and drink few beers while playing

If they forget to add turn-based playmode to the XP, then i will grab my hunting shotgun and open Sid season. K-BOOM.

I agree, hotseat is excellent. If they're not including that, what little interest I have in MP would be snuffed out and my faith in Firaxis will be beyond repair.

And this whole turnless mode. I hope it plays more like RTS, where the lazy person on the other end who is taking too long is nothing more than a sitting duck. Then I can wipe them out, and let the REAL game begin with the rest of the players. I don't see how everyone playing their turn simultaneously can possibly work.

Got spare money?

I'd be surprised if hotseat mode makes it in. It just doesn't seem to be much of a priority even in TBS games these days now that the emphasis has shifted from 2 to 4 to 8+ players in a game. I can remember playing 6 player Warlords 1 many years ago and the delays in even so simple a game became irritating once the players had several towns and armies to manage. In something as complex as Civ III it would be unlikely to appeal to many although there will always be a few who want such features.

Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations: Deluxe Edition

I heard someone say that it is going to use some sot of action points, for example, you can always move units around just as in a rts, but somethings such as shooting a gun can only be done after those action points recharge. This prevents everyone just running around shooting, and should help eleiminate the click-fest. I think I read about this on a review on Gamespot for the expansion pack.
