Our World in 1260 AD Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

The Tale of the Years 1100 AD to 1260 AD

1100 - Adjusted Workers to prevent Revolts in Apolytonia and Walvis

1120 - Barbs reported near kIndalia and Heliopolis. Sending Crusader to try and capture Barb Leader near kIndalia. Brandenburg receives Bab Caravan from Ur. +3 trade value. 2 Caravans arrive in Nalduria to help build Leo's! 70 shields to go.

1140 - Romans discover Mathematics. A Trireme (fully healthy) carrying a Legion and a Warrior refuses to move more than 1 square. ??? Maybe the Warrior is causing some problem with the Captain. Trireme bearing 2 Caravans arrives at Nalduria. 1 is off-loaded to assist in Leo's. 20 shields to go. I decide to send the Spice Caravan to Rome to help with science research. I can buy Leo's now cheap.

1160 - Barbs attack kIndalia! Butthe horseman is killed swiftly and with no injuries to our brave troops. The Crusader has not arrived yet (started journey from off-road). I've been watching Gunpowder research to make sure Leo's is bought at the cheapest time. Not yet. That balky Trireme starts moving normally again…

1180 - Americans are building Adam Smith's, too! Barbarians land near Antium. Looks like there are 2 turns left before Gunpowder. Complete Leo's for about 50 gold. Second Barb Horseman attacks kIndalia, same results. The Crusader seeks the Leader.

1200 - Gunpowder discovered! Those sneaky scientists fudged their schedule report to make themselves look good. No harm, though; Leo's is announced and the upgrades commence. All Warriors, Phalanxes, and Legions become Musketeers. 49 of them! We are surely the most powerful civ of all… The Science Team Leader pleads "clerical error", I am not sympathetic. I have him tied in the public square, naked, for the rest of the day as an example to his successor. The Barb Leader near kIndalia vanishes before being captured.

1220 - Indian government overthrown. I have been moving troops to Shadow and Light, exploring a bit, and watching the Workers carefully. They are mostly well-placed, but I order some adjustments. The Settlers continue to irrigate and roadpave, but I am sending 1 to Light to get some improvements going there. Have been delivering Units to Shadow and Light on the North side of the islands and letting them march to the cities to save Trireme movement. It appears to me that we are approaching unhappiness in some cities. I have started a couple of Coliseums with the idea that construction can be changed to Aqueducts or whatever if my concerns are unfounded. I am sending a Diplomat to see what's up with the Egyptians and their progress on Adam Smith's, but it won't get there for several turns.

1240 - India becomes a Monarchy. They get Monotheism from the Babs. We shall have to watch out for Crusaders from them now. It occurs to me I haven't been looking at the Foreign Advisor screen carefully! We are met by an Egyptian Explorer. I agree to meet in return (since we have a cease-fire) in case they want to trade techs. No such luck, they just demand Invention. Fortunately, they just grumble at my refusal and go away. I was tempted to demand Tribute in exchange for our patience, but decide not to provoke them. It is then announced that our cease-fire has expired. Oh well!

1260 - India gets University from Egypt. Egypt gets Wheel from India. They sign a mutual peace treaty. Hmmm… The Spice Caravan arrives in Rome. I had Paha maximized for trade when it occurred, but we only get 70 gold. No one wanted Spice, but I thought we would get move than that! Oh well, at least our research advanced a couple of turns.
_______________

I am stacking Caravans in Paha preparing for the next Wonder. I sent a Trireme past the 3-Whale spot near Light to make sure it is not occupied (it isn't). We should think about settling there very soon (landing a Settler with a Musketeer (or 2). We have 2 Triremes exploring the world and updating our maps about the size of some of the enemy cities.

I have screenshots prepared and will begin posting them here immediately. It takes longer to report on the game than to play it (even with extraordinary care)!

We are doing GOOD!

And I don't mind telling everyone that it was a bit difficult to start. I'm used to playing just for myself, you know? But with the hopes and dreams of so many others that I am representing, well, it was a bit daunting. I can safely say I played my best for all of you.

I wrote it up that way just with you in mind.

If I did well, it was because I was standing on your shoulders. This session was based on what you accomplished as President. "We done good", my friend! The next ones will be more my responsibility...

I plan to have a couple of Diplomats on hand to investigate Elephantine before we attack. The city may be locked up building Adam Smith's, but there is no guarantee that the Egyptians aren't sending troops from other cities to fill it up. Still, we will be positioned to take Elephantine the turn after Adam's is built.

I'm more worried about the Indians and Americans at the moment. They are potentially very dangerous. I agree about City Walls for all our outpost cities.

1. If we're transporting dips to investigate Elephantine, it may be worthwhile to also drop off one of our 49 (!!!!) musketeers to fortify on the path that reinforcements would take to that city.

2. With 49 musketeers, we should immediately switch all our production away from those units and build more crusaders. If we're going to be on a war footing, we'll need attack units.

Great job, cavebear!

I didn't mean the Minister of Science, BTW, in case anyone was wondering. I meant the Team Leader of the Gunpowder Research Project.

He inflated his project completion estimate so that his team would "look good" when they beat that date. It almost caused some serious trouble. I felt that I had to put a stop to that sort of thing real quick!

Between Shadow and Light, we have 5 Crusaders, 3 Musketeers, and a Warrior (who will be upgraded soon). I am picking up more Crusaders for transport to Light, and will also bring some additional Musketeers.

The only 2 places constructing Musketeers are Babar and Citadel, which are a bit on their own. But you are correct that we do need to build more Crusaders. Because some cities were about to go into revolt (or reaching about the same point), I had to begin building Temples (4), and Colosseums (3). The temple cities should return to Crusader production shortly. Shadow and Light are building City Walls, per the Peoples' instructions.

Good play, Prez.
The situation is very good.
But two things are not at the willing level :
- GNP : we are the 5th ! We need more markets, or to conquest quickly Egypt, the first civ for GNP.
- happiness : we have two collisea (latin plural ) in constuction : I hate that improvement, expensive and which needs 3 golds for maintenance ! (with no effect of Adam's). Avoid that and build market and banks, which have a positive effect on happiness !

Not many of our cities have enough trade to make Marketplaces very worthwhile. How much happiness do we gain from a Marketplace? It's not much, and Colloseums take care of 3 unhappy Citizens outright. I will change them to something else though, if the People desire it.

I agree we need to improve our GNP (and some other demographics). Fighting wars will become more difficult as the years go by if the other civs are out-producing us by too much.
