Everyone:

Just what the subject line indicates. And my apologies in advance if this is a tired, old question that's been answered already. My rudimentary search turned up nothing.

Will there even be a PC version of Civ3?

We wouldn't do it in-house, so it's up to the publisher (as usual). There was a Mac version of SMAC but not one of SMG, so who knows.

I would seriously consider it if it were up to me.Sales of Mac Civ series have been good. With the tremendous sales of imacs and new G systems, there is a decent market.
Just about every mac owner I know has at least 1 copy of a Civ game.

Jeff, any late breaking news about a Mac version (either classic or OS X) of Civ3? I've been reading that the coming OS X will make it easier for developers to create and support multiple versions for Windows, OS X and Unix/Linux platforms. Any comments? Do you think letters of support (a la Mech Warrior) to Hasbro Interactive would help the decision to release a Mac version?

Jeffrey Morris:

I would snap up a copy of a Mac-ported Civ III the instant I could get my hands on it. That is a promise and one, I believe, many Macintosh owners would freely give. Civ I, Civ II and Civ III are, IMHO, the best strategy games I have ever simply encountered (or will encounter).

So Cy, how do you really feel? I think that you speak for all the Mac-Civers on ACS!!! Heck, Mac users are even willing to pay money for half-baked "betas" (OS X and Civ2 MPG)!!! I GUARANTEE that we would sprint out in mass to lay down green backs for Civ3! Release lease it as beta and we'll play it for a year while Brian Neese from MacSoft writes the patches! Remember that for Mac-addicts, it's not a computer, it's a religion!!

It's been awhile since I asked the obvious question, so I thought I'd pose it again to see if there is any news. Anybody know anything?

Now with OS X coming on Mar 24th, I think that an OS X and Linux port would be more feasible. "It could happen!"

On the off chance that a rumor appears, would someone kindly post a note in the Civ2-Mac Forum and let me know? Thanks.

My first contact with Civ (Civ1) was on a Mac! And I LOVED it.
I hope I can experience this again.

In addition all newer Macs are shipped with GeForce2 MX Graphics chips. So I guess making lots of 3D thingies shouldnt be a problem.
But I dont think you will use OpenGL wont you?

BTW, there is a quite good Multiplatform (Win, Linux, Mac) Graphics, Input, Network,... Library available: SDL
I dont know the URL, but its quite good.
Loki has produced their Linux port of Call To Power with it.
SDL is available under LGPL (any modification to the libraries must be made public available, but it can be commercially used) IIRC.

MacUser, et al.:

My promise still stands — if a Macintosh port of Civilization III is made, it's mine. I was also among those who worked with Brian Nesse when he was busy writing corrective patches to Civilization II Gold. We didn't solve all the problems (one would've required ripping out the multi-player capability to solve), but I did get a copy of Civilization: Call to Power from the time, and also got an idea of what programming can be like.

Henrik: As far as I know Firaxis has yet always used MS DirectX Interface for their games. Now the prob is that when you have the MAC version you cant MP-play with Windows versions (if they use DirectPlay, which I am sure they will do).

Atahualpa:

I'd just be happy with a standard port to the Macintosh. Multi-player is nice, really, but being a Macintosh user means one is pleased oftentimes to just have the game. If it has multi-player compatible with Windows and/or other Macintosh machines, then that's icing on the cake, IMHO.

Me too! And I'm always happy to be the "Gad fly" that bumps up this thread!

Ata:

The nVidia GeForce3 (note the3! ) is coming to the Mac platform FIRST!!! It will be available this spring in the built-to-order G4 towers. The downside to the current fanless iMac is that it has to hold back on video card power otherwise things get too hot. High-end gaming has to go to the G4 towers. This info comes via MacAddict.

By the way, Civ2 MGE plays great in OS X Classic environment! Now we just need a Linux/OS X port!

Edit: cut ignorant comment about DirectX. Sounds like it is and will continue to be a big deal. Allegedly the MS X Box is named after DirectX and it will push the format hard.

Not a Mac user, but know and understand the passion - my friends all own macs. Whoever is publishing the title (I think it is Infogames at this time) would be foolish not to port Civ III to Mac soon after release.
