This project deserves to be killed. If for no other reason than unfortunate naming.

Deck guns on subs would quite likely increase their noise levels, though, correct?

Perhaps the gun could be semi-retractable.

True in that respect. I could see the Saudis kicking up a fuss about Crusaders being based near Mecca.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

This isn't exactly true. Factor in the reduced ordnance payload per sortie of a single aircraft, the much higher maintainance cost of the aircraft itself as a delivery platform, the risk to that platform - hence to the payload delivery itself, and I think you'll find it nowhere near as cost-effective and reliable as you might think.

Sorry, but I don't think it's anything nearly so simple as that. When you talk about cost of the delivery platform, are you taking into account the effort required to position a unit of Crusaders into a battlefield on another continent? And once you get them there, how about the cost of all of the men, weapons, fuel, supplies and equipment needed to maintain and protect them? A B-52 flying from Kansas does not have these enormous support costs.

This doesn't even account for the aforementioned bad-weather problems preventing said aircraft from even taking off.

Isn’t that what we have Palladins for?

Why would they be screwed? What about Palladin? The choice is not Crusader versus airpower, the choice is Palladin versus upgrade Palladin to Crusader.

Sikander, thanks for all the great information you've posted in this thread. In particular, thanks for pointing out that the current artillery systems seem to be just fine.

mindseye:

It's more of an isssue of campaign warfare and of how much ordnance you need and how to disperse it.

If you are fighting a desert storm or WW2 type campaign, artillery is nice because of how much more flexible it is and how much more rounds you can put on target, in comparison to air-dropped munitions.

If you are just spanking somebody or doing a raid, airpower is more convenient and the range issue becomes huge. (I.e. pretty easy to fly f111s over to Libya. Much harder to land forces on the beach. Send an army in, etc.)
