If I remember correctly, the only WW2 scenario originally on a Civ2 CD was the one that came with the basic game, not CiC or FW... and that has no special units at all, only the standard Civ2 units. You may be thinking of the WW1 scenario in CiC, which didn't really ahve unique units, but they DID all look different.

I think you are right, the original game probably did come with the WW2 and Alexander scenarios. Both CiC and FW expansion packs added more scenarios, but it was not until the FW expansion pack that a more complete editor was included. I believe the MGE expansion (that's three expansion packs, if you are counting at home - so why is PtW a surprise?), included the full editor that many have used to create superb scenarios...

While there were a few Microprose that were good (Verne, Independence, imo), it was not until works of the Civ2 HoF scenario designers that the true scenarios came to be.
