Slow pixel drawing problem Get a bigger avatar today!

How many are having this problem with Colonization in that when you start a new game plus do other things that require the drawing of an event picture, the drawing is painfully slow? IS there a way round this?

Related to this, if I fiddle with the memory settings on properties, sometimes I get a "This may cause problems blah blah blah", again just before drawing same event picture but if I choose to carry on regardless, then the picture now becomes "instant" and doesn't slow-draw anymore.

However, it is intermittent and has different results each time the game is run. One time it will work, the next it won't.

Who else is having similar problems? Has anyone found the ideal memory settings in properties for this?

I have a ge-force 2 card. I use to have a voodoo3. I get the same problem in both cases so that's not it.

I suspect it is an incompatabity with the Soundblaster AWE 64. I think this is when these problems began because it also plays music when it draws the event pictures.

Any suggestions?

Got spare money?

I have the same problem when I play on my Windows NT machine at work, and that doesn't even have a sound card. Then again, I have a worse problem: the game crashes early and often. I think I'm going to quit trying to play it here, and stick to my DOS machine at home.

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

I got the same problem with a Hercules 3DFX card. Now that I got an ATI Radeon the problem is gone or, the pixel effect is so fast I don't recognize it. IIRC this didn't happen with my old S3 card, but I didn't use windows that time

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I have same problem if playing in Win98.

But if I restart in DOS more game runs fine.

Unfortunately XP and 2000 don't have (real) DOS mode.

Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

Since I got the Geforce2 card, I haven't been able to go into DOS mode. The system hangs.

I played the game again in the early hours of this morning, and each time I ran the game, it did something different. But one time it worked correctly. It bombs out completely unless you tick the "Protected" flag in the memory tab of properties. I also switched on "Fast ROM emulation" on the screen tab of properties which may have helped with the pixel drawing problem but I don't know - it may have run right by a fluke after that.

I wonder if it would work consistently if I completely switched off hardware acceleration?

I downloaded Colonization for Windows for free from underdogs, but the only thing is you can't play it with the music. I like the music because it gives the game an atmosphere.

I can use music in my version.

In fact music is even better since my old PC never had wavetable, like my new PC with SB Live soundcard.

But I needed to install Sound Blaster emulator I got from drivers CD for my SB live.

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

I remember the sound was great using a Roland LAPC card. Civ 1 was even better, I was completely stunned by the kettledrums

Yeah the sound is way better with SBlaster 64 cards. I had an older crystal audio card and it was jsut dum dum dum dum... Now it blends the notes together.
Don't have the pixel draw problem. I use a S3 card (am getting ATi Radeon 7500) with win ME. I used to get a message show up somtime during the game about lacking memory but you just clicked OK and it went away.
Try running the Viceroy.bat file. I've found that that removes a lot of weird graphics bugs like pink and blue tiles etc...

I got the problem with the DOS program (the sale version). I didn't find a solution to that problem doing a Google search. But I found a lot of very obscure sites
