Foreign Luxuries... Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

There is a historical precedent that people pay extra for foreign goods. Think of gold, spice, and silk in Europe- all were imported, and valued because they were relatively rare. The relative novelty of foreign goods, then, should drive up prices and make citizens happier.

How about giving a +1 happy face/luxury bonus for foreign luxuries? This would represent a predilection for foreign wares. It would also tone down warmongering, and encourage trading...

What do you think?

Enter the AD-FREE zone

I think warfare has been toned down quite enough with such illogical baloney as invaders not being able to use exisiting roads, this Culture Flipping nonsense, the unimportance of capitals, no civil wars, and an AI Diplomatic advisor who hates you FOREVER if you start a war.

But, indeed, foreign luxuries, should have more effect than the domestic kind, in some way. Remember trade in Civ 2 - when a caravan reached a DISTANT foreign city you always got a lot more than if it crossed a nearby border and delivered its good to a neighboring civ.

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

It isn't that the goods are from a foreign civ, per sa, but rather, that they are from a far away land. So, your colonies goods from half a world away would impress the homelands people more than a neighbouring civs goods.
