Independence day sucked. A cheap ass remake of war of the worlds.

Firstly, the whole concept of ID blows. I mean, it starts off great. Unfortunately hollywood kills the plotline. To think that area 51 had a UFO, and for 60 years they couldnt get it to work. Then in 6 hours, a Scientist/technician who's never seen it before is able to fix it up and get it flying again! Then manages to manuever it into perfect position, and fly back to SW desert! Freakin silly...

Charlie.

It was so good, people didn't even notice it was sci-fi. Cliff Robertson won best actor in it.

Charlie was the movie version of Flowers for Algernon, which won a Hugo for best science fiction nouvella. I wish I could remember who wrote it because he made a really good acceptance speech. "If anyone can tell me how I did this, please do, because I'd like to do it again." No one told him, and he never again managed to get a story published.

Also, ID4 said the crash occured "In the Fifties", it occured in 1947.

And it wasn't a "crash", it was a "event"!

Actually, Zkribbler, Daniel Keyes has written a number of published books, his most famous (because I've read it) being "The Minds of Billy Milligan", a non-fiction account of a man with multi-personality disorder. I think the actual case is controversial as to whether it was all a put-up job, but the book was a best seller in it's day, so...

T2 is my favorite. 2001 or Blade Runner is probably the best. Star Wars is the most influential. Take your pick.

anyway my point about WoW was that it had a realistic ending. Bacteria killed the martians. Unlike Independence Day, which is kinda absurd if you think about it.


Pitch black? hmm..perhaps I should check that one out.

Another thing. How the hell does 1 nuke take out the mothership when its half the size of the moon? Food for thought...

Pitch Black is a pretty cool sci fi flick. It isn't as ambitious as ID4 or others but it is quality sci fi. A sequel is in the making now.

Forbidden Planet is pretty good. Especially considering when it was made.

For me though.

Star Wars. Absolutely astounding when it came out. There had been nothing with effects that could match Forbidden Planet till then in SF. Some fantasy films(Ray Harryhausen) did but no Science Fiction.

Best SF films besides those till after Star Wars:

The Day the Earth Stood Still actually

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

After Star Wars and in no particular order except maybe the first.

Alien better film in many ways than Aliens. Both are great though.

The Empire Stikes Back best in the Star Wars series.

Mad Max Two The Road Warrior people tend to forget about this one but its not only the most action packed film till Aliens it has a great deal of subtletly that people miss conciously because its in the background.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome but it shouldn't have tried to match the chase in the second movie.

Bladerunner is much better than people initially thought it was.

You know, I just saw one with Ice Cube, forget the title, but it is your stock "caught on the planet/island/psycho ward grounds" type story set on Mars.
It wasn't really deep, but it was pretty kick-ass adventure.

I recall enjoying Disney's Black Hole when I was a kid.

And how can we possibly exclude "Enemy Mine", one of the best small stage sci-fi flicks with a heart ever????
