Here is a poem I found by someone named Papa John.
April Weekend, 1974
(for R.C.B., a friend)
Nine months is a long time not to see
and hold someone I could love if fate would let me.
So this weekend was like springtime
after a long, dead winter, and the half‑sunny skies,
the winds twisting our hair, and the new flowers –
bright white dogwood along empty branches –
just reflected my feelings, an odd mixture
of green elation and brown despair.
But now you are gone, I fear, forever.
And I cling – like a silly child hanging on
to a burst balloon or a dropped lollipop –
to my memories of these few days:
Friday, the supper I fixed, Richmond by night,
the gay bar; then Richmond by day, the trip
to Jamestown (past bare woods where a dogwood
or two flashed out a false promise), and the pleasure
of holding your hand; on Sunday, the aluminum foil building,
and the guy who saw flying saucers we could not see,
above the pyramid in the cemetery.
Last night I found your sweet smell on my pillow,
and it is my best memory. I tried to be happy
for all I had and not sad for one thing
I cannot have; and I really was, and am,
no matter how long the winter lasts this time.

Here is just one of the many positive things that are occurring:
Lesbian teacher settles discrimination case
by Gay.com / PlanetOut.com Network
A lesbian high school teacher in Southern California settled her seven-year legal battle against the school district over discrimination and harassment, Lambda Legal said on Thursday.
Under terms of the settlement, the Oceanside Unified School District in San Diego must pay $140,000 to biology teacher Dawn Murray and provide annual sensitivity training to employees about issues of sexual orientation discrimination.
Hired PROMOTION
in 1983, Murray has received several state and national teaching honors. After co-workers learned she was a lesbian, Murray was denied a promotion, and she became the target of anti-gay remarks and graffiti that was painted outside her classroom. When she complained of the abuse, school officials threatened disciplinary action against her.
After learning of the settlement, Murray said, "Young people will learn from adult behavior, and it was important to wage this fight to show students all people have to be treated fairly."
Lambda Legal, the nation's largest legal organization dedicated to GLBT civil rights, helped Murray win an appeal in April 2000, arguing that California's anti-discrimination laws also prohibit harassment based on sexual orientation.

Come on, even I know ABBA. Of course, I did go see Mamma Mia here on Broadway, and that was easily the most ABBA I've had (or want) in a two-hour period. Oy.
I spent the last 3 NYC pride parades perched with friends on 5th ave. at 15th street. It was, in the past a perfect location, as you'd look north, and there was the Empire State Building, then turn south, and there were the Twin Towers. I have a feeling this year is going to be a much more somber affair than usual, and the absence of those towers will be a little hard to stomach.

And Monk, while there is no Gay Pride locally in the Quad Cities of Iowa and Illinois, every weekend, our community has a We Care Weekend, which I already described.
Wrong monk. Please understand my nitpicking, it took me no less than two minutes to figure out it wasn't me you were informing about the Iowan gay community.

I once went in support of my sister. Unfortunately she was not very supportive for me, since she joint the "lesbian only" part of the column.
It left me among a bunch of very stupid and annoying gays, who were shouting abusive remarks to all 'hetero". I left early and will never do anything like it again. I will not attend a 'demo' if it is not directly related to me.

Ive nothing against gays, but gay pride parades seem kind of silly. Even some of my friends who are gay think they are ridiculous. Like celebrating "white pride" or "black pride" its a celebration of being born a certain way. Pointless IMO.
Oh well, have fun anyway...

Such as cannibals.
I'm sorry, I know I probably shouldn't bring it up again, but that was just goddamned unbelievable. But that, Cali, is the reason for Gay Pride events.
