Buy either SMAC, or if you prefer more earthly empires; Europa Universalis. Particularly the latter is a fine game while waiting for Civ-3.

Can EU run on a P166, 64meg RAM system?

Test of Time is no real sequel, it´s more a graphics update, unfortunately with ugly terrain gfx However, it has some nice features for scenario builders. CTP1 and 2 are nice, but full of bugs, and not as addictive as good old civ2

This is what it says on my EU game-box (also click on the link in my previous reply):

[*] PC Pentium 200 Mhz (or faster)
[*] 64 MB RAM
[*] Windows 95/98/00/NT (with servicepack 4 or better)
[*] DirectX 7.0a
[*] 2 MB SVGA grafikcard (that support DirectX 7.0a)
[*] Soundcard that support DirectX 7.0a
[*] 150 MB free harddisk-space
[*] 8x CD-ROM

Let's see...... Test of Time was just bad. Call to Power 1+2 weren't sequels (and they were bad) and SMAC is really completely different from Civ in a lot of ways. Try out the SMAC demo to see if you like it first. If you get REALLY desperate, try CTP2, but only if you can get it CHEAP.

Do you want to choose the best game here are my opinions. But you have to be aware that there isnt a game as involving as civ2 among turn-baseds games.

SMAC - Very good game although you have to like sci-fi and understand the future techtree. I recomend.

If you prefer a Earthly game i recomend one of the CTP's series.
If you buy CTP1 you gotta be ready to get a lot of mods. The game is too buggy and it became only playable after getting the 1.2 patch, the Celestial Dawn's mod (and all of its complements: CD's graphics and the 1.5 CD's Combo).
On the other side i fully recommend CTP2. I think it is a very good competitor of civ2. Despite minor changes made from its original version and the really ugly (i would say visual pollution) tile improvment of the Shopping Mall.
For both CTPs games i recommend the apolyton World map 28 and 24 civs

I never played Europa Universalis

In short no but then while SMAC requirements call for only a 133, I played it on a 100, 166, 300, and my new 766 and found that even though it runs even on a 100 that it was choppy until I used a 300. But I would go for it with a 166. It is a very good game.

But if your looking to play Civ III, there is no way that Firaxis will be able to make a game in today's competitive market that can run on a 166.

On my P166 96mb RAM 8mb Grfx card CTP2 still ran really slow in the later stages even with just 8 civs. If EU is like CTP2 in graphics and stuff(I've never played EU) then I probably would try it but keep the reciept handy.

CTP2 is by far the best sequel to civ2 I've played. It's so good I just cant force myself back to civ2. With SMAC I was back with civ2 during the week.

Well, CTP1 REALLY annoyed me, and very quickly. SMAC was brilliant (IS brilliant). SMAC is like advanced Civ2 - it's got better diplomacy, better empire control (boundaries - don't get idiot "friendly" civs building right next to your cities) ... the only thing bad about it is that it's not on Earth. But that's not really "bad", it's just different. I play both, about equally. SMAC does indeed rock - beautifully polished and balanced.

CTP2 may be good... but CTP1 was so bad it put me off even trying its sequel.

SMAC is the best sequel of all... I'm not addicted to it, but t's better than CTP (2).

Too bad the best innovations of SMAC (SE, unit workshop) are not included in CIV3

Well, Alpha Centauri is pretty good, but if you're a Trekkie, get Birth of the Federation. It's a great game. Spent many a sleepless nights battling the Klingons. Although it's not quite accurate (compared to info in the series/movies) it's fun to bring a fleet of ships against a Borg cube.

Got spare money?

To Imgod2u: Birth of the Federation?! Now, that's probably the worst turn-based strategy game ever desived. It's slow, boring, and too resource-consuming. Did you try any other space conquest game?

Birth of the Federation is fun. Yes . . . there are some goofy things in it but, overall, I think it's a good game. I especially like how all the player turns are conducted at the same time.

Birth of the federation Remove this text

Oh, it did have a few good ideas: minor civs, borders and simultanous actions. I also preffered it's colony management option to MOO2 (less micro-management, more control and made more sense). I also liked the "wonders", so to speak.
On the other hand, it was a few major step backwards. Let's skip technology and design and say that is because it's an existing universe. Ok. whats's up with diplomacy? That was way worse then MOO2.
The game was also too slow: upgrades were too costly, and population grew far too slowly. It took ages for your population to grow to a reasonable size. It would have been well if you could transfer population, but no! Technology didn't even help: it was just way too slow. Technology also took an unreasonable time to progress, and didn't give too many benefits when it did. Add this to the extreamly slow gameplay, and huge resource consumption... the game was just SSSLLLOOOWWW.... Arrgh. Even for a turn-based game.

Age of Wonders is rated for a P166 and is fun if you like fantasy. You'll need to get the latest patch, but that is true for almost every game nowadays. Heroes of Might and Magic III is another fun fantasy game. EU remains my favourite though.

Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

It seems harder and harder to find good strategy games nowadays. Most is just boring RTS that feels more like arcadegames than strategy in the tradition of Civ. I even saw Diablo II under the strategy part on a gamersite, that's just scary.

Europa Universalis is one of the better games around at the moment. Never liked ctp and haven't even tried ctp2.

There's always colonization. It's old but worth trying if you haven't yet. You should be able to find it for free somewhere...
