I am experiencing a little mail problem, which is that it takes forever and a half to access my mail. Workable, but only if I know there is something I must send or read. Since I haven't been able to work on Clash this week end (btw if we could plug the place I play rugby at each new match into Clash, we'd get a very good random number generator), I didn't test the controlling civ problem. However, I believe that uncommenting the 2 lines (and corresponding if) with setControllingCiv in them in EncounterManager.java would make it work.
I hope I'll get my email access working soon...

Yes, problem seems to be fixed. Now it is just my computer which tends to switch off unexpectedly in the middle of my doing anything. I'll have to backup everything that isn't yet backed up this week end and look forward to buying a new machine...

[Problem now solved, please ignore]
I'm not sure how severe it is, but there's one message I can't download from the server. If someone sent me something important today, please try resending. If it was a big attachment, could you try splitting it up? I don't know that that's the problem, just a guess. Outgoing mail seems to work ok...
[edit] canceled alert and removed alt email addr.
