Actually its a very popular sport for young children to play. But not so popular as a spectator sport.

When I was in San Diego, there was a soccer announcer (either Univision or one of the Baja stations) who was quite amusing. He had this characteristic yell: "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL".

Kind of became a cult thing to imitate it. Remember hearing it on the mighty six ninety and the like...

Yes, football is one of the biggest sports here. Except football for us is the sport where the players throw the ball to each other, trying to score touchdowns, while trying to taclke each other.
But as far as soccer is concerned (thats what we call fútbol here) , it is my favorite sport to play, I played it for 7 years, but it seems kind of boring as something just to watch, being that it takes so long for any team to ever score a goal, which is probably why its not too popular as a spectator sport. If you want something fun to watch, you should have checked out the boxing fight between Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis that just ended about an hour ago, one of the most anticipated fights in recent memory. Now that was an event! Tyson got the complete $hit beat out of him, exactly what he deserved.

Sorry. I know that youy say soccer and not football, but I didn't remind when I write my reply. We find soccer interesting to wacth on TV; sure, there are not many scores, but in Europe we don't care about it.

For example: our soccer league match cand end with a equal score but yours not. It's curious the different ways that we like sport

I think tennis is more popular on TV. I remember some years before it was easier to watch basketball matches on TV, but now it isn't. I'm not sure, but I think now you have to pay if you want to watch them.
Tennis is still free.

This is true to many americans. They focus solely on the final score, not the excitement of 90 minutes of continuously flowing action. Solid midfield play does not impress them - I suspect because they do not understand the game so well. Maybe when the next generation grows up (they've all played and understand the game), its popularity will continue to rise.

If you ask me (lifelong futbol player), baseball and american football are far more boring than futbol. American football games only see 6 or 7 scores in 3 hours, how can that be any more exciting than futbol?! Baseball the same, with even less action going on. At least with futbol, the game doesn't stop and start a hundred times.

People who like hockey should be able to appreciate futbol. Just change the ice to grass and the puck to a ball. Voila! a sport they understand.
