Back again . . . Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I'm back! I tried to post the results of the "New Game" thread, but Apolyton wouldn't let me. I won the Conquest game in 1904

So I started a new game, this time Regent level, Archipelagoes, 5 Civs (including me). I'm the Greeks, trying for a Spaceship victory. Here are the problems I am facing:

1) I have built the Great Library, but haven't got a darn thing from it. I've had it for a while now, but nothing!

2) I'm currently running a Republic, but I've got waste all over the place. Most of my cities are wasting over 5 shields a turn! The only cities where it would make sense to build the Forbidden Palace are relatively new cities, and it would take over 100 turns to build.

3) Like I said, I picked small Archipelagoes, but my land mass is HUGE! It winds like a snake.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hey, hey, hey! Hi.

1. The Great Library. Are you leading in tech? Are you in contact with all 4 other civs? If you lead in tech, and in low civ games, the GL is greatly diminished. If you are not in contact with a civ, it's advances will not count towards the '2 other civs' rule, I believe.

2. FP. CourtHouses, PoliceStations. These reduce corruption and waste. WLTKD is good too, for far away cities. Park them at 6 pop with 2 or 3 tax collectors and they will gradually improve. Emphasis on gradually.

3. Archie sucks for conqering corruption and waste. Very difficult to get a cluster of cities around the Palace or the FP. Ah well, at least you get to have fun with ships.

Here's my current game. Where would be a good place to build the Forbidden Palace?

Well. I missed this the last few days. Sorry.

I see you have the workers going. Very tight on city spacing. That is good, it gives you more productive cities. I try a minimum of 3 tiles, so as not to restrict growth too much. That's a matter of taste though. Specialists are not extremely valuable.

I'd say from your position as of 1170 that New Corinth would be the best bet. You want it far enough away that the Palace and FP distance do not overlap. Also, it is good to give the benefit of lowest corruption to rapidly developing cities.

Where did you build it?

Just a question. Athens is trying to build a Wonder. However, you have 3 entertainers when none are needed. You could cut the turns to build Leonardo's from 69 to 33 turns if you use the mines (including the Iron mine that Pharsalos is currently working).

I will go with your suggestion, and try to build the FP in New Corinth. It's too bad that you have to be a warmonger in order to get a Great Leader. Maybe there should be a way of getting a GL peacefully. Just a thought.

Unfortunately, not much. It takes time to build FP in a good spot, because most of the shields will be lost to waste. Be patient and you will be rewarded.

O.K. Regent level. It's 1410 A.D. It's going to take New Corinth 168 more turns to complete the Forbidden Palace. In what year will it be complete?

How many shields per turn are you getting now?

How many luxuries do you have?

Can you arrange a WLTK condition? That will lend to reducing waste and speed construction.

Can you pick a war with any chances of getting a GL? The first GL you get should form an Army. Put units in the Army and go win an easy battle. That will allow you to build Heroic Epic in one of your better cities. After that is complete you stand better chances of getting more GLs. Use the second GL, before or after HE to build the FP in 1 turn.

Too be honest, you waited a bit long to build FP. But that can't be helped now. With proper management the 168 will turn to 80 and the FP will be built before 1850 or so. Or 1 turn and be built in short order after a successful war, say before 1600 or 1700.

Of course, a WLTKD! Anyhoo, New Corinth has enjoyed a WLTKD since 1410. The time to complete the FP dropped from 168 turns all the way down to 55! It's now 1630 A.D., and the FP is 19 turns away! YES!

Weirdness in the game, though . . . I built a Musketman in one of my cities, and I have Saltpeter, and all my cities are connected (except one that Culturally flipped to me on another continent from the Russians), but I can't build any more (not that I'd want to now, I've got Riflemen) I'm not even given the option to build another Musketman in the city that originally built it.

Rifleman superceeds musketman. Pretty soon you won't be able to build musketmen only infantry.

FP is finished, but I made a stupid blunder signing a Mutual Protection Pact with the Russians. Iroquois and Russians go to war, I go to war. Now I have war weariness all over the place (I'm now a Democracy), Iroquois are burning my cities to the ground, and the one city on the other land mass has culturally flipped back to the Russians. I tried to contact the Iroqouis to discuss peace, but my envoy is ignored. HELP!

One thing you can do is negotiate with the other civs (at least the ones you're not at war with) and see what techs they have to offer. That can tell you whether they're ahead, although not how far (since you can only see the techs you have the prerequisites for). One other hint you can get is that if you know they don't have a tech that's a prerequisite for something else, you know they don't have the something else either.

Also, you can check what kinds of units they're using. Infantry implies Replacable Parts and tanks imply Motorized Transportation, for example. Those are the only tricks I can think of offhand; does anyone else have any other ideas? (I'm not sure what spys can or can't find out, since I almost never use them.)

O.K., here's the latest save . . . The war lasted until 1842, and I lost a couple of cities to the raping and pillaging of the Iroquois people, and a few city improvements to the incessant rioting of my war-weary people.

When I played last night, the very first thing I did was to send another envoy to the Iroqouis people to sue for peace. Once again, my envoy was ignored. So I grit my teeth, and waited. In 1842, the Russians and the Iroquois declared peace. The Russians popped up all pissed off, and cancelled the MPP and the ROP. No big loss. At least I won't have to worry about being dragged into another war. The Iroquois then popped up and wanted to talk peace. It cost me 500 Gold, but it was worth it. Get this: In exchange for peace, they wanted 2 workers and Refining. I countered with the Gold, and they accepted. Now I just hope that I haven't lost too much time. There's a spaceship to build!

1. A lot of your cities are starving. Many entertainers from the war i guess. Of course you will reset them.

2. You are weak, weak, weak compared to the other three military powers. If you do not build an army, all three will come for you.

You have a tech lead. That is good. Use it for better units. You still have warriors. Strange.
