How should fortifying units work? (Time out:0 days after 17-06-2002, 23:15)
All units should fortify at the same bonus.
Some units should not be allowed to fortify at all.
All units should get a fortified bonus, but at differing %.
Who cares, just give me bananas and I'm happy.

Fortify flag Support Apolyton

Is it just me or does fortifying spearmen and other ancient units just seem illogical. When I think of fortifying, its digging foxholes, running barbed wire, etc. How exactly would you fortify a warrior so that its club is more useful? I'm not talking about fortifications which are a completely diffrent thing and I have no concerns aout those.

This said, I wish we had a fortification flag that indicates whether a unit would benefit from the full fortification advantage or a toned down version say 10% bonus.

The romans built fortifications of a ditch and a palisade every time they camped (or they were supposed to). They improved it each day they stayed in place.

I would assume fortifying would mean setting up ambushes also, hence a defenders club would be more useful.

I know the romans did, but not sure about other ancients units. I read once that ancient battles were often matters of agreement as to where and when to fight.

To me, the concept of fortification is ANYTHING that would help to defense.
Different fortification bonuses would only add unnecessary complexity to the game.
Unit differences are already well noted, as they are included in each individual unit stats.

Any fortification changes should be part of a larger combat system revamp. As the system stands now, this just makes things more confusing.
