Country is the best stuff out there, by far. It's guitars and fiddles and none of that synthesizer crap.

new country sucks. It has none of that. It is all prefabed, prewritten music with a new singer thrown in to sound different. . It just sounds too generic. They just rearrange the words and use different singers to sound different.

give me johnny cash any day .

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Rhyming is overrated, it's mainly used with children.

It can add nicely to a song if used effectively. It seems like the majority of rap revolves around rhyming words (wow, what a concept!) with some kind of obnoxious or often sampled beat.

I didn't say that I could, I'm saying rhyming to a beat isn't music.

Writing the rhyme is different than rhyming to music.

Of course, I can't do either. But I would be better at rapping

Put an end to popups!

Rap is music, people. It may not be what you like (it's not what I like), but denying it a status as music is rather condescending and, frankly, elitist.

All you need is a beat for music, as we certainly consider African drum performance to be music. And rap incorporates a lot of musical elements beyound beat, such as tempo changes, syncopation, etc.

Considering the limits to which music was stretched during the 20th century by composers such as John Cage and Phillip Glass, rap easily falls within the bounds of modern musical definition.

What, and rap ISN'T?!!?!

Actually, you hit the nail on the head in one respect: pretentious music is garbage, exactly because it is pretentious. In all fairness, most genres have some pretentious exponents. Top of the list is anything purely commercial, particularly pop, but r'n'b and rap are very guilty of it as well. Some rock, but Nu Metal is particularly pretentious. Of course, good songs are good regardless of genre, but rap and techno are almost totally devoid of good music. As correct as Boris might be, i always thought of music as having to contain more than one note, which rules out most rap

I used to hate rap most of all, but the doof-doof music that plays loudly from lebanese cars in Sydney grasps the title firmly with both hands. Devoid of variety and completely unimaginative, it sucks pus!!

Oh, and anything from any Eurovision Song Contest too 100% pretentious

I don't know what progressive house is specifically, but I do know I hate techno, dance, and house music as a whole since it seems so artificial and fake.

Literally everyone I know that likes it likes it because it's not popular though. They enjoy feeling cool and elite by talking about DJs no one knows or cares about, telling people it's the ultimate in music, etc. Everyone else listens to it and goes 'wtf?'.

As far as I know John Cage, for him it's simply "everything you declare to be music is music". I think this is utterly stupid, because it makes the word meaningless.

anybody see the "Friends" episode where Ross plays his "music"? That is something I would not call music.

But if it has a beat, and rap does have a beat, then it is music. 'nuff said. case closed.

I don't know the exact name, but it's some kind of jazz.
Those jazz quartet, supposed to be relaxing music, gives me headache.

I like blues, booggie, even dixie, but those quartet, you know, with the brush (or how is it called) at the drums going t-tchh-t-t-tchh is real pain to me.
Jazz cafe are for me antechambre of hell.

No I didn't

I am not going to deny the fact that ballerina dancing is a very physically demanding activity, but seeing grown men hop about a stage like excited schoolgirls in tights isnt exactly the most manly thing I can think of. It's like the guys who ice skate. Physically very demanding, but incredibly feminine, just like ballerina dancing and boy bands.

Is there anything inherently wrong with any of these activities? No, but this is an opinion thread. And it is my opinion that the music I enjoy the least is the music that is accompanied by very cheesy, very whimpy looking, choreography.

Don't slight me for not enjoying these things Boris. Please spare me.

I did not slight you for not enjoying these things. I firmly believe enjoying music is an extrememly personal thing, and to criticize what other people like and don't like a rather arrogant and useless thing. I have never derided people for not liking the music I enjoy. My argument in the other thread against Snapcase was predicated on his erroneous view of music history, not on his tastes.

What I didn't like was the connotation that ballet dancers are "fairies," which is simply not true. In fact, the word "fairies" raises eyebrows altogether...

And you're also making a generalization about ballet that isn't true. While Ballanchine style is pretty much that "pretty prancing," modern ballet dancing has gone well beyond that. I cited the Rite of Spring as an example, and it certainly has no prancing. Barbaric stomping, more like it. Considering the final scene is basically a gang rape of a virgin sacrifice, I don't think prancing applies.

If you took fairy to imply I was saying "gay", no that was not what I was doing, just to clarify things. NSync and Backstret boys will get more girls than I ever will, but I will still call them fairies
