Monopoly Money Get a bigger avatar today!

Are there any tips on getting monopolies and holding them. When ever I get one which isn't to often they get pirated by the AI. Do I really need to have a ship near all my routs?

Lately what I have been doing is sending out tons of settlers to build cities right on good. Just to get the good. It works very well. Build a city name it Beaver and build city walls and a marine. Bam you got a good.
