Only one leader per elite unit? Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I was testing out a strategy so I was reload cheating, and I noticed that a given elite unit seemd to be able to only generate one GL. I had an elite unit which had already generated a GL, and after reloading (I obviously got interested in testing this theory) about 50 times I still had not generated a GL. I moved another elite unit in, and it had generated a GL on about the third attempt.

Did I just play the odds wrong, or can a given unit only generate one GL in its lifetime (or in x number of turns)?

(PS: obviously "Remember random seed" was off)

Ok, so for now I have to remember who's generated a GL and who's not, but I do wish that I'd asked this question *before* I reloaded 50 times to test the theory.

Thanks for all the (very helpful) replies.

P.S. I have a follow-up question below.

Nope, there's one GL per elite unit.

Yes, there is only one GL per elite. Firaxis has confirmed this.

Another related interesting thing I learned recently, that Firaxis has also confirmed, are the odds of unit promotion. Here's a Mike Breitkreutz quote from a post over at CivFanatics:

quote:

Odds of promotion are based on whether the civ has the Militaristic trait or not and whether the victory was against barbarians or not. Basically, chances of promotion are halved for victories over Barbarians and doubled for Militaristic civs.

non-militaristic civ vs. non-barbarians:
conscript to regular: 1 in 2
regular to veteran: 1 in 4
veteran to elite: 1 in 8

non-militaristic civ vs. barbarians:
conscript to regular: 1 in 4
regular to veteran: 1 in 8
veteran to elite: 1 in 16

militaristic civ vs. non-barbarians:
conscript to regular: 1 in 1
regular to veteran: 1 in 2
veteran to elite: 1 in 4

militaristic civ vs. barbarians:
conscript to regular: 1 in 2
regular to veteran: 1 in 4
veteran to elite: 1 in 8

If a victorious unit fails to get promoted, it will always be promoted upon surviving any other battle in the same turn. This gives an obvious advantage to defenders as well as an incentive to use the same offensive units for additional battles whenever possible.

I believe Firaxis is working on flaging elite units which have produced a GL, just so we know.

Does this apply to generating GL's too? That would be too simple i guess

You're right, that would be too easy Unfortunately leaders always get their standard 1/16 chance (1/12 with Heroic Epic)

Only 1 GL per unit, but as I recall, if you UPGRADE it then its GL flag is cleared and it can create another. Of course it would have to be promoted to Elite again first.

[EDIT] Oops! That's what I get for posting while at work -- interruptions delay the post and then I'm just repeating what others said.

Follow-up question:
...........................................................................

Can elite units in an army generate GL's

Also, what is the meaning of the army itself (as opposed to the units in the army) being regular, or veteran, or elite? How and when does the army itself get promoted?

Thanks again.

Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

great leader related question:

Can flagging more than the Heroic Epic (in editor) as a GL appearance odds improver (1:16 down to 1:12) improve odds below 1:12 for GL appearance or is 1:12 the best chances you can get. Not counting the militaristic effect either. And is militaristic chance 1:12 for having Heroic Epic or something better?

1) More than one Heroic epic-type building has no additional effect.

2) The militaristic civ trait does not affect the odds for Great Leader generation in any way except making it easier for units to become elite.

Units in Armies can NOT generate GLs. Got this from Mike B. (I think) a while back.

Yeah, I remember that too. No GLs from armies. Which is why I put elites that have generated GLs already in armies if possible.

The discovery of this tidbit (originally from CivFanatics, IIRC) has definitely helped my leader generation. I just completed a game in which I generated 12 great leaders (standard map). I played china (militaristic) and leader #1 was made into an army so I could build the HE. Still, that's a lot of leaders.

For everyone's benefit, it's my understanding that both the upcoming patch and PTW will somehow flag those elite units that have generated a GL.

Thanks Firaxis, btw... by nature, you typically generate GLs at exciting junctures, and although I try, I often forget which damn elite I've gotta pull outta there.

I do the same as Arrian... elite+leaders are mostly put into Armies.
