Master of Magic can be downloaded from the Underdogs, dear colleague. I'll PM a link if you can't find it.

Umm
I got it working (without sound, under Win 95). Have you tried following the links recommended by Underdogs? IIRC one of them had a technical forum with different ideas for different computer setups.

Or just use a DOS boot disk. Works like a charm.

mattyboy: don't have enough hard drive space to try that, but my new HD should arrive by post any day now.

moomin: I don't know anything about DOS boot discs.

Well, then let Windows just create one for you, and you can go straight one not knowing anything about it!

You also have to know (or... remember!) how to make the proper amount of EMS memory available in DOS, which could be the unsetting task under Windows.

Instead of a DOS boot floppy disk, I ended up making a... true DOS bootable partition on my Win98 machine, which I easily select at PC boot thanks to BootMagic (comes with PartitionMagic).

This only to be still able to play MoM and Machiavelli!!!

With help from the forums on this site I was able to get MOM working fine (except for the digital sound) under Win XP home ed. Hope everyone else has similarly good luck!

I wish I had thought of making a bootable DOS partition! I had to reboot to DOS to properly run MOM when I was still using Win98. It worked like a champ though... Just took a while to reboot and actually get into the game.

Actually, I found it best to dodge the whole reboot issue and just run the exe directly and put up with no sound.
This saved me having to work out any technical issues and allows me to do other stuff on my computer in the background. Also allows me to switch to spreadsheet when wife walks past so she knows how hard I am studying.

I can no longer remember whether my system is Win 95 or 98 - I think 98.

Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations: Deluxe Edition

The problem I had with running the exe in 98 (or 95) it's that I didn't manage to *properly* configure the pif file or whatever was used to specifiy the memory configuration of the dos sessions it opened, and obtain the required 583 K (or something) of EMS memory...
Also, IIRC no matter how I edited the config.sys, config.dos autoexec etc. Win98 files, I always ended up with the CD drivers loaded and taking up the room needed to load the game....

If it can be done, I was not able to reproduce it, and I found it easier using a DOS partition...
