First, here is a raw collection of all possible trades with the foreigners we know. I'll go to the point just after (you may not read the whole list)
France :
Iron Working for 3 gpt and 58 gold
Alphabet 78 gold
the wheel for 75 gold
mysticism for 76 gold
America :
IronW for 3 gpt and 66 gold
Alphabet for 84 gold
the wheel for 81 gold
mysticism for 82 gold
Greece :
Alphabet for 84 gold
the wheel for 81 gold
mysticism for 1 gpt and 64 gold
Persia :
Iron Working for 3 gpt and 71 gold
Alphabet for 1 gpt and 69 gold
the wheel for 84 gold
Iroquois :
Alphabet for 81 gold
the wheel for 78 gold
England :
Alphabet for 1 gpt and 66 gold
What's interesting is :
Iron Working for 3 gpt and 58 gold in France
mysticism for 1 gpt and 64 gold in Greece (they don't have Iron Working)
The Wheel for 78 gold by the Iroquois (they don't have Iron Working, nor Mysticism)
Alphabet for 1 gpt and 66 gold in England (they don't have either Iron, Mysticism and Wheel)
See ? Iron Working is the most valuable tech out there, and we can buy it. It's perfectly possible for us to tech-whore it, in order to get al other discovered techs, for free : the wheel, Mysticim and Alphabet are all cheaper than Iron Working, and tech devalutaion won't be that important, as some Civs we'll trade with son't know each other.
We could even have some money back in the process.
Here is the plan I strongly support :
- Let's buy Iron Working to the French.
- Let's buy Mysticism to the Greeks with IW
- Let's buy the wheel to the Iroquois with Mysticism or IW (whatever we decide)
- Let's buy Alphabet from the Brits with the less valuable tech. They couldn't give us money to fill the gap between Alphabet's and IW's value anyways.
With such a plan, we'll be on par with best Civs in the world, for a mere 3 gpt and 58 gold !

Thats one plan that definately has my support. After all the complaining about the AI doing tech whoring, its nice to be able to give them a little bit back. Also, donīt we have 90% Tax just in order to take advantage of situations like this.

Not a minority of 1, but perhaps 2 at most...
3 GPT seems a hefty price to pay to me as well. Remember, soon we will have barracks comming online we will need to fund. Also giving GPT will mean we earn cash slower, therefore we research/ buy tech slower.
Iron Working, at present, offers us no real value. We are not likely to have Iron in the one mountain we own. The most it is good for is identifying targets.
I would suggest purchasing The Wheel. No, not for Chariots. If it so happens that we do, in fact, have horses locally, that will give us another GPT for ourselves.
