I was a die hard Civ II player and when CTP and SMAC came out I went with SMAC. While SMAC plays OK, I never could get into it, the names of all the advances might as well have been written in greek. At the time, players of CTP seemed to be on the verge of a revolt against Activision for being total butheads for releasing a half finished game. So I went on to other games.
Anyway, now I come back here and see that CTP has lots of mods and the game has been fixed. I could probably pick up the game for 10 bucks, get the mods, and really enjoy it.
Is there any reason to shell out 40 bucks for CTP2 that is still needing to be debugged and doesn't have any mods?

just the addition of borders and the extra options in diplomacy mean that things are going to be different. also, given the experience of lots of people form ctp, mods are going be out quicker
on the other hand, if you really want to play something civ and cant wait 6-8 weeks(or maybe more), 10$ isnt much...
