Retreating? Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Under what circumstances do fast units retreat in 1.21f? I've been attacked, and attacked myself with about 8 Horsemen in my last game, and not once did any of them retreat... they were all destroyed in battle. Does it even work anymore or what?

yes, i've seen it work alot! They only retreat if they are getting their asses kicked, if both your horsemen and their spearmen have 1hp left it will stay and fight on to see if it can win.
I also think you need 1 movepoint left, so when your going to attack you can: Move once (1mp), attack(1mp), and possibly retreat (uses movepoint you have left, if you do!). But i'm not sure!

EDIT: PS: I have no idea if i am correct or not!

Shouldn't that be Taiidani?

I suppose that makes sense... maybe I'm just in the middle of a run of 'bad luck numbers' in the game set. I'm curious to know whether you can retreat after moving once (and if attacking counts as 1 move point), or not, since that might be useful to know.

I don't know the exact formula (I think I saw it flying by, here or in the strat forum), but it also depends on level: as said fast units will never retreat when down to 1 HP and the other down to 1 HP, they will never retreat from another fast unit, and on top of that elites have larger chances of retreat than regulars.

I don't know it difficulty level is a factor, and thought that additional movepoints or terrain don't matter.

IIRC:
fast unit = +1 hp --> retreat = 75%
fast unit = equal -->retreat = 50%
fast unit = -1hp --> retreat = 25%

at least something like this

You can change it in the editor, but the default retreat chances are as follows:

Conscript 34%
Regular 50%
Veteran 58%
Elite 66%

Fast units never retreat when fighting other fast units.
Terrain and difficulty don't matter. I think units also don't retreat when their opponent only has one hitpoint left. But could be wrong at this point.

when you think about it, Cavalry should be able to retreat from a Knight, cuz cavalry can shoot backwards while moving, and a knight has to get up close to the Cavalry!

Fast(er) units have a possibility of retreating when they get to 1hp, as long as none of the following are true:

1) There is no place to retreat to (outflanked).
2) Their opponent is at 1 hp.
3) They are Fortified.
4) They have 0 movement points left.

The chances are probably those posted above (since they are in the editor)

I don't think Riders or Cavalry will retreat from Knights. I've had a lot of experience fighting with those units, and I've never seen it. Not once.

I don't think any fast unit (2 or 3 moves) can retreat from any other fast unit.

the same with MAs versus MIs. I never seen a retreat, the MAs just shoot until they explode.

Units with 2 or more moves will not retreat from other units with 2 or more moves.

Trip, I think he meant if the defender is fastmover, it won;t retreat if it's fortified

No that's wrong. Attacking any fast unit, meaning anything more than one move, will prevent a retreat from happening. The relative speed of each unit is irrelevant.

So a unit with two movement points (ie a "fast" unit) will not un away if fortified.
However; will that same unit prevent another unit - say with three movement points - from retreating. IE a cavalry attacks a fortified horesman, is retreat possible?
I'm just trying to clear this up. I've had lots of ideas for mods, but didn't know how much this could altered. One problem was to allow infantry to move twice. Would this allow them to retreat if attacking fortified infantry? (great for a First World War scenario) However, would this also prevent ANYTHING from retreating if it attacked an un-fortified (or even fortified) infantry?

Well, it would appear that we have hit on something which DEFINITELY needs to be changed in one of the upcoming patches (or even in PtW!). A unit with 3 mp should be able to retreat from a unit with 2 mp-so long as it meets all of the other, previously mentioned conditions!! As long as this is not the case then I will not be able to do the mod I'd most like to do, that is: giving all units MORE movement points, so that they can travel further (I feel that the current MP's are too low!)
Anyway, hope they'll look into this!

Yours,
The_Aussie_Lurker.
