Can anyone with good experience at CTP2 give me a good run down on the best way to play the game

Put an end to popups!

Try searching for older posts. Posts from one or two years ago will probably give you more strategic hints. Apparently, no one discusses strategy on CTP2 anymore, which is a shame.

Enter the AD-FREE zone

The best way I've found to win quickly is to quickly kill any civs that are near you, then build up to 20 cities, get Facism, then go on a crusade to kill everyone else.

I agree with Oerdin here, that's usually the kind of strategy I follow, although I'm a very peaceful player and will therefore usually only go on a crusade against 1 or 2 civs and close alliances with the others.

Wow, Lucutus agreed with me.
I have a tendency to be quite militant and to try to kill everyone. Of course sometimes I play peacefully just to keep people guessing.
